"Stella" had a dirty butt....with a pronounced bulge around the anus. One morning, I saw a bit of very red blood around that area so I took her to the vet. Her anal glands were impacted!! Im thinking worst case, maybe worms? Nope......she was anal. Vet extracted her glands (very gross and kind of cool at the same time). She gave her an antibiotic shot that lasts for 2 weeks, which is great. We all know how cats just LOVE having pills jammed down their throat. I also had to get a fresh stool sample to bring to my vet for testing of worms. Its a multiple cat house (haha) so I had to be vigilant and coy, just like a cat. I was successful. My love for my cat has no boundries, I guess.

Stella is a long-haired cat, looks almost like a Maine-coon only different. I would like to offer my advice to trim long-haired cats butt. You dont have to cut or shave down to the skin, which might cause itching as it grows back. Just enough to keep the area clear. If you have a long-haired cat like a maine coon only different: Check for a bulge. Also, you might see 2 dark spots at 5 and 7 o'clock on the butt-hole. Looks like a scab or dried poo. The actual cost of an extraction is 15 here but we all know "going to the vet" almost always equates to a second mortgage!! You could see your local groomer periodically for a trim and extraction. I intend to learn it myself, not for the cost saving, but for the trauma it causes Stella. She dont like going bye-bye........

When you say "extracted" do you mean "expressed"?

My Maple has issues. I have to shave around her butt area (took her to a groomer just for the first go around because she really needed a bath too and she's 17 lbs). Recently got a clipper for cats so I can do it myself. That should be a BLAST when I do it. Anyway, I wipe her down every day because she wets herself sometimes and she does NOT like me touching her anal area at all. She protests rather loudly (I don't blame her though to be honest).

extracted.  Those are the words my vet used. Expressed seems like a better word, though. I did a test run using an old sweats' shirt sleeve. Make sure the wrist part is tight enough to hold your cat but loose enough to breath. It worked for Stella and I was able to inspect her area easily. I plan to use blunt scissors to trim the fur but were the clippers expensive? Did the noise scare Maple? Can you easily maneuver how much fur you remove rather than a close shave?
