I have a feral female cat that has moved in. Last tuesday she was spayed. That night I noticed that she was licking her lips a lot. She also had swelling at her incision site. I took her to a different Vet, that's closer, and he said it wasn't a hernia but infection or reaction to the stitches. She is on amoxicillin now. The Vet also checked her mouth. Her upper right canine tooth is broken off at the gum line. (I don't remember her licking like this before the surgery). The Vet said to watch that she eats well and look for swelling. He said that the tooth would probably reabsorb.

I am concerned that she is hurting or will get infection. Problem is I called a Vet clinic that does a lot of cat teeth. They quoted me $300, I can't afford that for my own teeth. I really dont want her to hurt though. Has anyone else had experience with this?

As long as she is on the amoxicillin, which should be a minimum of a week, possibly longer, she should not get any infection.  As for pain, I guess you will have to watch her and see if it hurts her to eat or drink.  If teeth hurt badly, they will refuse to eat.  I'm not sure if you got any pain medication to help after the spay, but I usually get some from my vet when I get a cat spayed.  When my old cat had dentistry recently, she got 0.1 ml. of buprenex under her tongue every 12 hours for 5 days because she had many teeth removed.  I could see the difference after she was medicated because she would suddenly get hungry and eat, and she would nt eat when it wore off.

She was given Meloxicam for pain with the surgery. She has been eating well. She isn't on pain meds now.

Smoochie had the same problem, a tooth that broke off at the gumline and several other teeth that were literally rotting away in her mouth. She was MUCH happier after they were all taken out. ($300 is a good deal!)
