Hi everyone - I'm in high and low spirits today as my 7-year-old, orange, long-haired, rumpy half Manx cat (no tail at all) Phoenix had to have emergency colon surgery yesterday and he's at the vet hospital right now. :( The procedure and vet care I've been told will be about $5000 which I can't afford at all. (who can??!?) I actually started an online donation campaign to raise $ for Phoenix's colon surgery because I can't afford it.
As you may know, Manx cats are privvy to Manx syndrome and ofter suffer spine, hip, bowel/stomach problems. Phoenix being almost7 and a male is at higher risk for colon issues. He has always had digestive problems where he would not feel his poos and leave them all over the house and would also get diarrhea often as a baby. He thankfully grew out of the runs later in life, but he always has a dirty bum (i try and keep it short and clean) and often pees in random places around the house.

Anyway, he's going on day 5 at the animal hospital. Friday evening he was violently ill, throwing up everything he ate all over the house, and hadn't passed a bowel movement in days. I didn't know what was wrong so Saturday morning I took him into the vet where an x-ray discovered he had a massive, solid piece of stool (a grapefruit-sized equivalent to us) stuck in his poor little colon. It was completely lodged, and would not pass.

Very dangerous and painful for him. Over 4 days they had administered eminas, tried to manually dislodge it and put him on stool softeners, but the thing wouldn't budge.

Going Ahead with Surgery

By day 4 they could  not get the mass to pass with treatment so they said they would put him under, try and soften the stool manually, and it that didn't work, while we was under, they would proceed with a colon operations, go in and cut that portion of this colon out, maybe more or maybe less, depending on the damage and lack of elasticity left in that section of the colon. The doctors quoted $5000 for the care, meds, IV, enimas, surgery and after care! I didn't have a choice and gave them the ok.

Yesterday morning he went under the knife, and the 1.5 hour operation to go in and cut out the damaged colon and stool went really well. Or so I thought...a half hour later, I get a call saying Phoenix was pale, his blood pressure was crashing, was not breathing on his own and that they thought he was bleeding internally and may not make it.

I frantically drove back to the vet a nervous crying wreck, almost killing several pedestrians and crashing the car and waited for news. An hour went by and the vet finally came out. She said that some severed blood

vessels from the damaged portion of the colon that they had stitched up started bleeding - they re-operated, fixed/re-stitched the colon up to stop the bleeding and staple to poor guy **** again. 2 Surgeries....omg!

Iwas freaking out! :( My poor sweet baby boy alone and scared and not breathing without a machine.

Anyway, hefinally began to breath on his own about an hour later but still had a low temp, low blood pressure, and was not moving. The vet closed at 7 pm but they were good enough to send him home with a vet tech for monitoring all night. She sent me pics and updates that night and in the AM the little babe was stable, but not moving.

This morning he was transferred back to the vet and I was able to visit him after work. He was alert, stable and actually peeing in his litter and eating a little! We are not out of the wood yet as his stitches are bleeding slightly, but he's on an IV with antibiotics to prevent infection and I'm hopeful!

Raising Money

I started an online campaign to try and raise money to help pay for all the vet bills, medication, hospitalization, and after care. The goal is to raise $5000. So far the emotional, financial, and social (shares) support has been incredible from strangers, friends, family and animal lovers!

Any help at all would mean so much to me and his girlfriend/wife Lagi the cat. She is roaming around my apartment lost and confused as to why he's missing, crying.

Please share with your friends and if you feel so included make a donation - even a $1 can mean so much!
