I understand that humans bad breath comes from the gut..so I take probiotics

daily..one a day..

Lily will kiss me in the morning before dawn on the nose and her breath is always fishy or bad bacteria on it..

She does not eat canned food or dry that is fishy

Any suggestions..she is 9 months old and is the avatar...cat..Lily

weighs I guess 8 lbs..not sure but she is a big boned cat...

here she is last month ..8 months old then..

I do not want to give her runny stools ..and am afraid probiotics would do that as they can in human beings...

thanks

Sheri

My friend's cat had bad/fishy breath which turned out to be the smell from rotted teeth. I suggest a trip to the vet and they'll most likely recommend a dental cleaning or antibiotics to clear things up. Of course, dental cleanings are expensive and add on extractions... yikes! You may need to prepare yourself if it does turn out to be rotted teeth. Fingers crossed it isn't!!

HI

I managed to look in to 9 month  old Lilys mouth today and teeth look good..bad fish breath since I got her from the shelter Nov 15 and today is Feb 17th..

Do you prefer the thumb cover to apply paste to or the cat toothbrush?

She did not like her mouth touched but I rubbed a cotton ball dry on her long front tooth...and did okay with that for l second...and then it was biting at it and me and squirming..she is a strong cat..

I sure hope that is the cause of her horrible breath

adult teeth coming in at 9 months..

it makes me gag for her to touch my nose in the bed when she gets up

at dawn...LOL

I make myself let her brush her whiskers on my chin and nose

once....and that is all she wants anyway ..to let me know she is

getting off the bed after being there for 8 hours with me..

Then she is the wild cat destructive kitten you have heard about

curtain climber , carpet tearer, and chair and couch climber

with nails extended...for all daylight hours..

a sleeping beauty all night..and so beautiful after dark..on the bed..

LOL

I'd say the chances of a 9 month old cat having any serious periodontal disease yet is slim. I don't find the thumb brush very easy to use, and I don't think it's as effective as a toothbrush, but really whatever your cat will tolerate is going to be best. It usually takes a lot of time and patience to get a cat accustomed to teeth brushing. This video has a step by step process for easing your cat into it: https://www.veritasdvm.com/veritas/courses/brushing-your-cats-teeth/

I always used the brush on Angel. I think that finger cover is too big for a kitty. I believe the video I posted is on that brushing cats teeth thread we had a few months back.  I also used to call it his "brush, brush treat."

I think associating the treat word helped. I also found one toothpaste he really liked. It was the malt flavor kit from Pet Smart. I tried other flavors, from other stores, & he did not like them!

Here is what I use to buy from Pet Smart. It was about 11.00, & is nice to get a new brush, by time you run out of paste. (they weren't sold separately)

Glad this caught my eye.  I really need to start brushing Hekitty's teeth.  So far, they are strong and white and lovely, but she's seven.  Should have been doing this long before, but since she refuses to eat wet food, she pretty much keeps her teeth clean crunching her kibbles.  STILL trying to introduce wet, to no avail.
