Hi Gang,

Hoping someone can help me out. I inherited my mother's two cat when she moved to an apartment. They have their share of issues that Mom either didn't notice or wasn't concerned with.

One of them is a 4 year old spayed, short-haired female. We did notice that she left "smears" behind on Mom's glass window table where the cat liked to site. We had her tested for UTI etc. but all was fine except urine was quite concentrated. She had one litter of kittens before Mom adopted her and the vet did mention her vulva was more open than usual which might be causing some vaginitis. We added some soft cat food and water bowls in different location so she would drink more. The "smear" smelled like urine to me. Now that this cat lives with me I can observe her more and noticed that she comes out of the litter box with urine dripping off of her. She doesn't seem to notice it or have an urge to clean herself when she gets out of the litter box. So, she is spreading urine all over my house.

She can choose from one open and one closed litter box (very tall Nature's Miracle corner box). Both have SwheatScoop cat litter.

Any experiences or suggestions?

It sounds like she doesn't know to clean herself.  She might have been removed from her mother while she was too young, Mama cats teach their kittens to do this.  Your new kitty might just be clueless.   The following thread addresses this problem, mentioning bathing as a spur to get cats to clean themselves.

http://www.thecatsite.com/t/126151/my-cat-wont-clean-herself

Another idea:  I read a long time ago of someone who got their cat to start cleaning themselves by wiping something innocuous on the appropriate area.  I wish I could remember where I read this - it was kind of like priming the pump to kick the cat's instincts into gear.

Having said all of the above, what you say about "urine dripping" seems a bit unusual even for non-cleaning cats.  I'm wondering if there isn't a physical problem involved as well.

Hi Margd,

Thanks for the response. I wasn't particularly clear in my last post. This cat (Pooh) does clean herself to the extend I would think is normal for a cat but what I meant was that she doesn't jump out of the litter box and go "wow, I got pee on me, I had best stop here and clean that".

I took the lid of the litter box and made the litter deeper, so hopefully I will catch her at it and see if that helps. I have my doubts as it appears this was happening at my Mom's too.

I will give the vet a call this week and see if I can set up a quick appointment over the phone. The cat was very recently tested for UTI so there isn't much point in collecting yet more urine (which takes several days of her sitting in a crate at the vet clinic).

Thanks!

OK, so removing the lid from the cat litter box and making the litter deeper has not helped.

Anyone else have a cat that leaves the litter box with pee on their fur?

Lots of times my kitties get out of the box with a little bit of a wet hiney.  They do clean themselves, but sometimes it's not as quickly as I would like and it's usually after they've sat down on the carpet.
How deep is the litter in the box?  I don't think it's a litter box or type of litter issue at all.  It's really more of a grooming issue.

Thanks Stepahnietx. I was hoping it was something we could fix. Are your cats females by chance? I had two males cats years ago (that both passed away a few years ago) and this was never an issue.

Sadly my job situation is putting me in a position that will require me to find a new home for these two cats. Solving some of their issues would make that much easier I expect. I have never ever had to rehome a family pet so this is a tough one for me.

Thanks

Wow Stephanie. How to do tackle that?

Seems so odd that all 3 of yours do it and neither of my two did and, based on lack of response to this thread, few cats do it. I am beginning to wonder if people simply aren't noticing? Can you tell me something about your litter box setup? I can't see how my cat would be getting splash-back but maybe squatting real low? Maybe sinking into the deep litter so her bum touches it?

Update

I changed from Swheat Scoop litter to a clay-based (Cat Attract) on to try and convince the other cat to poop in the litter box rather than on the floor. That worked and as a result, the issue with kitty with the pee on her fur after urinating went away also.

Thank you for the update.  I'm glad you found a solution and shared it with us.

OK, just an update. I took Pooh (the lovely cat in question) to the groomers and they gave her a sanitary shave so very little fur on her bum and down her legs. This morning, she still had urine and kitty litter on bum. Sigh. she must be almost sitting in it when she urinates. This is really horrible as it is a kitty I need to rehome.

Hi there,
Have you ever found out what the issue was? My 1 year old male cat is doing exactly the same.
Thank you in advance!

Have you found a solution to this problem? My four year old male cat sits in his litter to pee and he gets it all over his behind and it drops EVERY WHERE when he gets out . I am not always home to track him down and clean this up and it's beginning to make a huge stinky problem in my home . Please, any help here would be greatly appreciated

Yes my seven-year-old calico when she pees I see that she does not squad all the way down she is a big cat she gets Pee all over her but her Fur and it gets on her but her legs and goes all the way down to the bottom of her stomach and she reeks really bad of it. I took her to the vet she does not have a urinary track infection she uses the litter box but this seems to happen it seems like I’m washing her and cleaning her 8 to 10 times a day and she has a foul smell and she just reeks of urine. I seriously don’t know what else to do I can’t find any answers no one will help me so I understand what you’re saying please somebody answer this question that knows what we’re talking about.

Now that my cat is aging I'm having this issue. I suspect it is because his arthritis is bothering him, but he also has some kidney changes according to his most recent xray so I will be addressing this with the vet again. Maybe have their lower halves x-rated for issues that might be causing them to not be able to hold themselves.

I’m having a similar issue with my 4 month old male kitten. His bum fur is wet after urinating in the litter box. He then stains my sheets and keep pawing at his own stains. It’s driving me nuts.

I'm lucky that I'm home all day right now with Covid, I bought the non toxic cat wipes (if it says not to ingest I don't buy it, sometimes I use wet paper towels) and I check him when I hear him coming out of his box, it's in a closet near where I work, and I wipe him down immediately. That's my only solution for now. I check his underside and paws. I'm sorry you are also going through this. I hope your kitty is well.

My cat (nearly 8 years old) has this problem. It is connected to his neuromuscular disorder and his back legs don't exactly work as they should. The illness has also caused a loss of muscle in his hind quarters. The whole ordeal has caused him not to be able to posture the way other cats would when they pee/poo, so he does his business in a different position. This does cause quite a bit of pee to get on his back legs and bum (I've tried a lot of different litters too). The vet has fully explained that in his case it is normal for this to be happening but I can't speak to why it would happen with other kitties, maybe they have similar issues like arthritis etc.? When my cat does pee, sometimes it is a lot cleaner than other times and the times when it's not, I give him a partial bath with a hot wash cloth.
