my cat is not spayed and she's constantly in heat i wanted to know is it dangerous to leave her without mating for a long time, and is there a way to stop any harm  ? (other than spaying it's not really an option for me )

i don't want to breed her but i don't want to hurt her either, so please if anyone familiar with breeding and if there's anyway to help ease it for her and make sure she's in good health.

Why is spaying not an option for you? It really is the best option.

The problem with not spaying (and this is just as true if you ARE breeding) is that it increases the risk of certain cancers, not to mention the possibility of phantom (false) pregnancies.

You also have to bear in mind that, during the mating season, your cat will cycle rapidly in and out of heat. This isn't great for her or you. She'll most likely be desperate to get out to find a mate (and it only takes one escape to produce a pregnant cat), and the whole process is stressful for both of you.[article="30348"][/article][article="0"][/article]

i live in egypt , and here not all vets are familiar with these kind of surgeries and i read and heard from a lot of people that there cats were hurt from this surgery or other ones  ( like C-section) because of lack of experience, so i would rather not take that risk of  whether that vet is experienced enough or not.

I don't live in Egypt but perhaps it would help you find a good vet if you contacted Egyptian Veterinarian schools or Veterinarian associations. You can specifically ask for someone with expertise in spay surgery.

The link below lists some of the veterinarian school facilities and associations in Egypt.

http://www.arabmedicare.com/vmegypt.htm

Name & Address of Veterinary Schools
  1. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Assyut University
  2. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Zagazig University
  3. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University
  4. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Alexandria University
  5. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Beni Suiff University
  6. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ismailiya/Canal University
  7. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Kafr Al-Shaikh)
  8. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Moshtohor/Banha)
Name & Address of Veterinary Association
  1. General Egyptian Veterinary Medical Syndicate
    6 Al-Hadikah St. - Garden City
    Cairo, Arab Republic of Egypt
  2. Egyptian Veterinary Medical Association
    8a 26 July St.
    Cairo, A.R.E.
If you search these groups, you should be able to obtain phone numbers and email addresses.  Hopefully they will know who among their members spays cats routinely.

Another source of information might be rescue groups near you.  Since I don't know where in Egypt you are located, I don't know if any of the following are close to you but you could probably contact them an find a rescue group near you.  Since rescue groups are usually pro-spay and neuter, perhaps they will know competent vets.

Good luck.  Hopefully someone will be able to guide you to a vet who can spay your girl and relieve her discomfort.

I believe you can get progesterone shots for her to bring her out of heat. I'm sure the vet can get the progesterone; verify dosages online if you don't trust the vet to know. Those have their own risks though. There's also an acupressure technique I've heard about, I think you can find videos on Youtube. That should buy you some time to find a capable vet anyway. Because, yes, unfortunately, unspayed cats can have a lot of things go wrong in their reproductive systems, and an emergency surgery would be considerably more dangerous than a routine spay.

I've heard of breeders using a q tip to stimulate cats to ovulate and also using "teeser toms" (male cats that have had a vasectomy I believe) if they are in heat when they don't want them to breed but this usually causes a false pregnancy where the cat is fooled into thinking she is pregnant and will therefore go out of heat for several weeks or even up to 2 months at a time. This can cause all sorts of other issues though and it is important to be aware that there is a risk of infection and other complications in female cats when they are not spayed. I'm not sure how healthy or safe it is for a cat to go through this on a regular basis but I know there are people who do it.

I am not sure what is available in Egypt in regard to veterinary care but I can understand the reluctance to take a cat to a vet if they are inexperienced or aren't knowledgeable about spay/neuter procedures. In many countries these surgeries are very common and performed so often that most vets can safely do it without much risk to the cat so most people have a hard time understanding why someone would not spay/neuter. However there are cats who cannot be spayed for medical reasons and in some parts of the world it is still not a common practice to spay. There are some alternatives like what I mentioned above and I know some vets will give cats hormone treatment to keep them from going into heat (like Willowy mentioned above).

Thank you detroitcatlady, i never heard about using q tip, i will search more about it to know more about the risks.

here spaying is not really a common thing so if i decided to do it , there will be a high risk of losing her, so i'm trying to keep her away from surgery so i wouldn't take any risks.
