Looking for advice. Our 12 year old was diagnosed with Pancreatitis about 1 year ago. He was stable until New Years eve. He went to sit on a chair in our tv room and shows no interest in moving. We brought food and water to him which he accepts. He got off the chair and peed on the floor. We brought the litter box in and he uses it. He goes about 6 feet to use the scratching box and a couple of days he went and sat in the sun in another room. His weight was 12 lbs. and is now 9. He takes very small amounts of food on his own and we also syringe feed him. He is on Prednisolone Maropitant and Famotidine. Since New Years he is no better or worse. Bloodwork-low potassium, high amylase, high WBC, low RBC Hemoglobin & hematocrit, high platelet count, high neutrophils, low lymphocytes. He was on Amoxicillin for 14 days. In 6 weeks he has not improved. Any ideas? Thanks

So, no other antibiotic other than Amoxi and that was given for 14 days with no improvement? If so, your cat needs a stronger antibiotic.

What is your vet advising?

Vet said his problem appears to be neurological and wait and see. His appetite is poor but he does eat. He uses the box, no vomiting or diarrhea. He was a lap cat and now he stays on a chair or goes on the cat tree. All tests were negative except for the PLI.

If your cat still has elevated WBC (do you by chance know how high?),then there is still active infection.

When was blood work last repeated? How do numbers compare to blood work done at the beginning of January?

WBC was 18.3 on 1/6/16 and Amox was started. Labs have not been repeated.

Hematocrit was 10, weight down to 7.9 and temp was 99. Also detected a heart murmur. His advice at this time is to do the unthinkable.

What is the suspected cause of anemia? What was your cats white blood cell count?

Is your vet offering any other information?

Your cat is clearly not thriving right now, but the question is why and can that/those issues be addressed.

He only tested Hematocrit to see if the anemia was better or worse since the last draw. He said the prednisolone should be helping and it isn't. Fluid and a blood transfusion would be like putting a bandaid on and not solve what the real problem is. He said it may be cancer.

Has an ultrasound, x-rays or other diagnostics been done?

There is also the option to seek a second opinion from a different vet.

Ultimately, you have to weigh your cat's quality of life. If he is having more bad moments than good, if he is sleeping more than being alert...as well as the physical...if he cannot gain weight.

What is his appetite like? What are you feeding him? Is he still on the appetite stimulant?

Ultrasound was done pancreatitis confirmed with an elevated FPL. This was as different vet. Original vet said it was not "time" yet. His appetite is poor-shrimp, cat food and baby food. Still alert and using litter box and scratching box. He does sleep quite a bit but I guess I am not ready to give up since he isn't.  Kidneys and liver are ok. Eyes are clear and fur is beautiful. He does groom himself as well as having help from his companion.  I was so upset I couldn't think straight.  Wish you were there with me. I should have insisted they do the full blood work but the Dr. only wanted one test run for anemia.
