Dog treats/ foods that can be used for cat

I know cats have to have taurine added to their foods, while dogs do not. Having said that, have any of you found any canned dog foods or dog treats to feed your felines that are nutritionally complete? The reason I ask is that dog food comes in the larger cans & is more cost-effective. Also, is the NV raw for dogs different than their cat variety? I've changed my boys over to wet food twice a day, with kibble overnight. Also, I found that most of their favorite Friskies flavors had wheat gluten as the 3rd or 4th ingredient. Aren't a lot of cats sensitive to wheat gluten?

The only brand I know that are the same between cat and dog canned food is Nature Variety's Instincts. Here's a comparison I just did with the ingredients listed on their website (right is cat and left is dog):


It's a more expensive brand overall. I know some Fancy Feast Classics don't have wheat gluten like the Turkey & Giblets and Liver & Chicken. Except FF cans are small and liver is the first ingredient in the Liver & Chicken flavour. 

Purebites for dogs can also be fed to cats since they're just one ingredient (except, I'd skip that one with the cheese)!

The only brand that can be fed to both dogs and cats is the Nature's Variety Instinct Originals canned dog food because the same formula is ued for both species: http://www.instinctpetfood.com/instinct-originals-canned-natural-healthy-foods-pets Some people like to add a little sprinkle of powdered taurine to the food to ensure that the cat is getting enough. None of the other NV dog foods can be fed to cats.

Dog treats that are just 100% freeze dried meat or seafood can be fed to a cat The jerky ones may  be too tough for a cat to eat. PureBites and Whole Life are two brands. There's also Stella and Chewy's Carnivore Kisses. The dog treats tend to come in a bigger bag with large pieces but once you break the pieces up into cat sized piece, you're getting like at least twice the amount of treats for not much more than a teeny cat sized bag.

Yes, the NV frozen raw for dogs is different from the NV raw for cats. NV used to make one frozen raw formula (in different proteins) for both cats and dogs but they stopped that a little over a year ago to make separate formulas. The freeze dried raw has always been separate formulas for dogs and cats.

Buying food by the case can be more cost effective. Indepedent pet stores often will let you buy cases of food and maybe even give a discount. Buying online can sometimes be even cheaper than buying from a store. Chewy.com is a popular place as is Amazon and PetFoodDirect and OnlyNaturalPet.

Some cats can handle gluten while others cannot. Some people just avoid it altogether. Another canned dog food that can be for both cat and dog is First Mate. I have bought the Chicken and the Turkey in the past but that is how I found out several of my feral cats are allergic to chicken.

The only thing in the food is meat and vitamins. You might want to check that out. Where I live we have a place that carries it for $3.00 for the big can.

I use the Orijen FD dog treats for my cats. They're just freeze dried meat so no issues using them for both.

Clarification - I meant PureBites and Whole Life are two brands in which the dog freeze dried treats can be fed to a cat.

Jerky-like dog treats that are 100% meat may be too tough for a cat to eat.

  YES, I ordered some duck for Angel once, but it was tough jerky, so I had to soak it in hot water for a while first, before I could give it to him, but he loved duck!
