Hello! First post on here and I want to ask fellow cat parents on how to maintain an e collar on my kitty Beans (11). She went to the vet yesterday after I noticed her acting lethargic and constantly licking her underside. We found an odd sore near the base of her tail, called the emergency vet and they asked us to bring her in. Turns out she had an abscess at the base of her tail which they were able to lance and clean up. Now she's been home with an e collar that she has been battling to remove whenever we step out of the bathroom she is currently locked in. She can actually still reach the wound with the collar on and has scratched close to it with the e collar. Any tips or suggestions on how to keep her from hurting herself further?

Welcome

Collars come in different length sizes a larger collar may prevent her from reaching the wound.

All kitties try to rip them off especially when left alone!
other than watching her close to you, keeping happily distracted,  hard to prevent them from trying...

If  wound can be covered Vet clinics offer great bandage tape.

We often call it the collar of shame here and kitties do hate them.  Do you have a rigid one?  Kitties sometimes tolerate the soft ones better particularly one called the pro collar.

She does have a rigid one and it would seem to work if it were a little bit longer and prevent her from being able to reach her wound under her tail when she tries to groom. Maybe when I call her regular vet for a follow up appt I can ask if they would recommend a larger size cone also. Stinker has managed to escape out of the current one, so for now I am watching and cuddling with her close by. My main worry is if we go to put it back on her tonight and she accidentally scrapes the cone with the wound and makes it bleed again.
