Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this in, but wasn't sure where else to post this. Felt it was the best place to attempt to ask the question.

I inherited a placemat that isn't non-skid. I was trying to figure out a way to improve it to make it non-skid. I looked at shelf liner, but I kind of want to find a cheaper method, maybe of something that is lying around the house. Any ideas? It doesn't even have to be non-skid, just something to keep in stationary.

I like the non-skid shelf liner stuff that looks like lattice work and feels like soft rubber.  It;s cheap, it dries easily, and it's very non-skid.  I use it under cat beds too if they are on a slippery shelf.  On the mats, you can simply glue it on.

I DO have it hanging around the house, I always keep a roll around, it has so many uses.  Other than that, there are those stick on pads you put under pottery items etc. and if you use about 6 of those, you can pretty much stabilize the mat.
