Hi, It's Saturday again.

I've been checking out the courses offered at my local community center and gym today, trying to find something new to do on my days off. I'm thinking about taking up Pilates.

If you were going to take up an new hobby or sport what would you chose? Something creative or active?  Learning a new skill or something more academic?

Pilates is the only exercise which appeals to me. Unfortunately, there are less than few classes here. The only one I found was in some fancy private gym and was like $100 a lesson. No thanks!

I'd probably take photography classes first.  Maybe some drawing classes also - I used to draw/paint and haven't in years and could use some guidance.  I also would LOVE to learn how to knit.  No classes here for that either - or at least any that I can get to.  The ones I've seen are in the daytime or early evening weekdays.  I don't get home until well after 7pm so that's not possible.  And I don't know anyone who does nearby or I'd just ask them.

Probably photography. We have seven beautiful subjects in the house. And I'd love taking pictures of things when I'm out walking.

I'd like to learn French. I was up to the intermediate level in college and I've forgotten most of it but I think it would come back quickly.

I would like to take yoga but never had the courage to try it.  I am one of the least flexible people on the earth so I know I wouldn't be able to fully do a lot of the things that the others can do.  I used to take Tai Chi and still practice it some at home.  There is a weekly yoga class at the senior center where I live, yes I am 60 so I qualify for things at the senior center.  I might try that, less likely to be a class full of people way beyond what I am able to do.

I've been thinking about horse agility recently (think dog agility with horses). I'd love to learn silversmithing too, but would worry about dropping the blowtorch - I'm probably the clumsiest person you'll ever meet, and my hands don't always grip properly. Cat/animal behaviour also appeals. I'd love to learn to crochet and knit too.

Something creative like beading / jewelery making or gardening. Or geocaching. That seems a lot of fun.

Community centers are a great place to try different activities
Where I am there are some adult education centers that offer a wide variety of courses from cooking to finance to clam digging to sports to art to short story writing and a ton of other things.

I would love to take photography classes or an advanced art class.

One thing I miss and wish I could do again is pottery! There's something relaxing about the feel of wet clay on your hands and creating something that is unique and one-of-a-kind.

Something else I always wished I had done (but never did) was woodworking!

I'd like to get back into learning how to play guitar. Took lessons a few years back (for about a year), I can still somehow play "Daytripper" but just the intro :lol3:

Photography is defiantly in the plans. Also I would love to take some cooking classes. I am a decent cook and loving creating or tweaking recipes. I would love to learn the knife skills that you see on tv where it takes seconds to do a good chop on an onion, lol.

I would also love to do quilting. Maybe I can get me a machine and start when the kids both go to school.

I would definitely go for something creative!  Probably painting or photography but ceramics sounds really neat too.  My mother likes the cooking classes at the adult education center.  The only problem is when classes get cancelled because not enough people enroll.

I have a few pilates DVDs that I used to enjoy; so if I had to do something active i'd go for that.  I'm not the athletic type.  Gym class was always my least favorite in school.
I never felt like it was fair to grade us on our athletic ability.  I tried!!
The only thing I ever did well in were the flexibility exercises.  So pilates is more up my alley!

I'm taking an on line class in InDesign, which is fun. I'm looking at a  Personal Finance one as well, which I could definitely use.  I don't have much time to go to classes at the center because I work full time and most of them are during the weekdays, but a photography one would be fun.

I hate when that happens
I signed up for a particular health type class at adult education place a few years ago and it was cancelled because of low enrollment. I later signed up for a simialr class at a different place and it too got cancelled ecause of low enrollment. Fortunately I got a full refund both times.

I really want to learn Chinese knotting but I haven't found any good tutorials or books on how to make the various basic shapes and the more intricate 3D animal shapes

I so agree about the pottery!  I also used to work with it when much younger and always enjoyed it.

I collect miniature ceramic pots, specifically those which have a raku finish.  Would love to learn how to do that.

I have a degree in ceramics and I did a lot of raku firings. It's so easy to do if you have an open space big enough to build a makeshift kiln. I used to fire in an old oil drum. FUN FUN FUN!
