Noel is a smallish young adult, 6.5 pounds and about 1.5-2 years old. She is inside only, intact (until next week!), and has a moderate to high activity level. We're gone during the day but in the afternoon and evening she is very active with my 6 year old. She seems active for a cat anyway, she's constantly running or chasing or rolling around with my kid. I am used to my mom's very elderly lazy cats!

We feed 3 ounce cans of Fancy Feast classics pate exclusively. There are a few other brands she will eat but we feed her mostly FF classics. She eats a can at 5 am before I leave for work and finishes the rest during the rest of the morning and it is gone by about 8 am when DH/DD leave. At 3 pm when we get home her bowl is empty and she acts like she is staaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrvvvvvving. LOL She gets another can which she wolfs down within an hour or so. By 8 pm she is prowling around in the kitchen, begging to eat. I can give her another half can as a snack and she is happy. Sometimes she eats a whole can but that is usually in response to being fed a brand of food that she will not finish. That is why we feed FF usually. I was sick of throwing food away. She does not eat any people food or treats between meals.

She poops normally, pees a lot, is very healthy, her coat is shiny and she does not shed, and not fat at all. She is bony in parts and normal sized everywhere else. Noel came to our house as a very friendly too skinny stray in early December and has been dewormed (precautionary from being a stray, vet saw no evidence of worms) and vaccinated. She ate a TON when we first brought her inside but that calmed down as she gained a little weight and became more food secure.

I keep reading that at her weight, two 3-ounce cans of FF is very sufficient for an indoor cat of her small size. However, she eats 2.5 or 3 cans. I feel bad restricting her when she is obviously not fat and seems very active but I am paranoid. If she was eating too much, wouldn't she be getting fat? After her spay I know she will need to eat a bit less but at this point is she OK eating what she does? Is she considered an active cat?

Is she a big boned cat? How much does she weigh..

I do not think 3 small cats of food a day is excessive if the weight is not coming on...

I would try the 3 cans and see how it goes. If she starts getting pudgy, then cut it down or go to the Vet..

If she is not gaining weight or seems satisfied with the 3 cans, I would go to the Vet..

my guy is a big boned cat..just a long slender guy. I would be happy if he eats 3 cans a day.. when anyone sees him, they comment on how skinny he is...I try to bribe him with food....

I have the opposite problem..

Good for you for taking in Noel! I think the line you bolded is probably key: Noel's three-can-a-day eating was probably the result of her skinniness and hungriness, plus food insecurity. We went through the same thing with our two cats when we adopted them: they were ten months old, from a minor hoarding situation, and horribly underfed and skinny. They ate unbelievable amounts of food in their first months with us. Even two years later, they eat quite a bit for their size, around seven pounds each on small frames: they're still pretty young and active, though they are finally slowing down, thank goodness.

Feeding Noel the Fancy Feast pates is a good choice since it's high-protein and low-car. And she consistently likes it!
If Noel continues to be active (our cats didn't start slowing down much at all until they were more than two so you may have a way to go!) and isn't getting plump, I agree with @artiesmom that it should be fine to keep feeding her two to three cans a day. Personally, I follow our cats' hunger levels and appearances more than generalized guidelines on feeding: individual cats' foods and activity levels differ a lot.

If/when you do find that she's gaining a little too much weight, it can be helpful to keep feeding small meals and snacks, like you seem to be doing, but shrink them a bit to reduce the overall calories. That works pretty well with our cat who was smallest and most insecure when we adopted: Edwina has an annoying scavenging instinct (she loves to look for dried up crumbs in her dish area or eat her sister's leftovers, which we have to watch carefully) but is generally happy as long as she gets something to eat, even if it's just a little bit.

I hope Noel's spay goes easily! And I'd love to see a picture, too, if you have one!

She's just a small 6.5 pound cat. Small, thin to average for her petite build, and eats like a horse.
Thanks for the photos! She's a pretty cat! And your summary of her size looks just right. She reminds me of our Ireland. (Ireland's our somewhat neurotic cat: I sometimes think she burns off the calories with nervous energy and prowling...)

She is beautiful!

She reminds me of my guy....long and lank...

Even when Artie is acting like a little pig, he will not gain weight...it is just his metabolism

I like the NV line because it is high protein, low carb, and no fillers..

She probably needs a bit more food..try it..

good luck
