If anybody need has used the Luuup, how has it fared in the wake of a kitty with diarrhea?

DON"T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!

I bought this on the Kickstarter campaign.    It NEVER worked as demonstrated and I spent more time cleaning up cat litter that drained out the bottom than I ever have just cleaning a cat box.

After four days of trying to make it work according to the instructions and online videos, I threw it out.

It's a cat box that has holes in the bottom. Enough said.

Thanks. I was curious about the sifting boxes, but never tried any and don't want to. For me, the plain old open boxes are best. I'm sorry your experience with it was crappy...no pun intended. :D

I just have a regular box and clumping litter for Baby. I clean it once daily, twice if need be. I just scoop it. I looked at those self-cleaning boxes, but they didn't look that great for the price. Its interesting to see these mechanical ones, but I'll stick with scooping.

I'd say both yay and nay.

Yay - quicker than scooping

Nay - no cover yet and my cat likes to dig and kick the litter out of the box, even with the guard

Tips:

For the person that said it was a cat box with holes, you aren't using the three trays correctly.  They have to be oriented correctly or the litter will just flow straight through.  The top two need to be oriented 180 degrees to each other, and the bottom one is oriented the same way as the top.  Lift the top tray, sift and dump the clumps. Now take the top tray, turn it 180 degrees, and place it under the other two trays...

Correct, it takes a bigger bag, or you can angle it to a corner - over the other two trays to minimize spillage.

If you are scraping urine, either you're not putting enough litter in the box (Tempting, because there isn't a cover and kitty might be like mine and be a digger and spill over the guard), or you aren't using clumping litter.  Needs three or four good inches of good quality clumping litter to work as expected.

Never heard of Van Ness boxes before but if they have a cover, count me in. :)

When I first got Baby I bought a box with a cover. She did ok with it, but wasn't exactly happy. I realized that it was like an outhouse holding the odors in, and that's what she didn't like. She also didn't care for it being like a tight cave. Needless to say, I got rid of the lid and got her a bigger box. She's happy now, especially since it doesn't stink and she doesn't feel trapped.

Van Ness is a brand. I have 2 pet food containers by them and use to have a litter box by them - lasted 5 years - good litter box. One of the litter boxes I have now has the exact same type as the Van Ness litter box I had for 5 years.

I'm thinking about training Baby to use the toilet for a litter box. She's not afraid of it when its flushed, and I think she could do it.

My husband has always cleaned the litterbox without complaint.........UNTIL I BOUGHT THE LUUUP!  Even gentle sifting results in litter all over the floor. A receptacle with a huge opening is necessary in order to dump the waste matter without spreading about more litter. And there's always the chance that you'll position the bottom box incorrectly and have the entire thing empty litter on your floor.

Our two cats have taken to pooping against The Luuup's walls making it necessary to wash and dry the poopy upper box before replacing it, a 15 minute clean up several times a day.

While the idea is sound, the materials used to execute the idea are inappropriate. If it weren't for the "sticking" problem, we'd give The Luuup another chance. But for now, we'll carry on scooping.

I just got my luuup, and it is absolutely disgusting. I haven't been able to go more than one day in-between cleanings, and you have to scrub the whole large pan that you pull out EVERY TIME. It takes about 20 minutes to do properly (I have to get into each of the little holes), and then I have to leave it to air-dry so that I don't create some mutant fungus/bacteria situation. It is totally nasty. I wish it wasn't. Scooping is FAR, FAR easier, by a lot. Don't waste your money.

You all are going to think I'm crazy, but I just use regular garbage bags for the litter box. I have to buy them anyway and they're really strong. It saves money.

I just wish the scooper had smaller holes... It doesn't pick up all the small pieces

I liked it the first time I cleaned it out, but everyone else is right.  It seems to leave a muddy residue at the bottom of the pan every time you clean it out.  I don't quite understand why this is, but it pretty much requires you to wash it out every time since you're stacking them on top of one another, you don't want to get this residue on the bottom of the other ones.

I kickstartered this and just got my box, unfortunately it's a bust. I was just reading smack7s' review and that's pretty much exactly the experience I'm having. I tried not rinsing the box out each time (however you still need a tool to scrape the urine and cat litter off the side, so it's still pretty hands on and gross) and it causes the pieces to not sit flush and it leaks.

I'm feeling pretty mislead by them because they had multiple "design" delays throughout the project where the CEO mentioned that stuff was not up to the level of excellence he required and had to be redone or modified. Then there's a GIANT HUGE PAINFULLY OBVIOUS flaw that literally everyone is going to run into that is not addressed. With how much testing they claimed to do on the product they must have known about this and chose to ignore it. Or they just didn't test as much as they said they did, either way it's bad form in my opinion.

The other thing I'm disappointed with is how small it is. My cat can barely get into it and he's a pretty normal sized cat, 12 pounds give or take a little bit. The pictures make it appear fairly large, but they must have found some tiny kitties to put in it to get that effect, which in my opinion is just more reason to feel duuuped.

We're already shopping for a new one because I made the mistake of tossing our old box, that's my mistake, but I was just SO excited and SO certain it was going to work and be great.

This has been precisely my experience; a bit of a disaster. HOWEVER, I am hopeful that the issue is the type of litter I am using - too much clay - the urine is mucky and sticks to the box. Better clumping litter may solve the problem. I just ordered a new brand after reading on line reviews and am hoping for an improved experience. Currently this is FAR TOO MUCH WORK.

After using the Luup forabout a month now, I think it's the worst litter box ever... You have to scrape the clumps out.. It's like they stick like glue to it! I've complained and asked for my money back, but they keep telling me I'm using the wrong litter! I actually use Tidy Cats regular which is what they say to use... But even if I were using something else.. If they think a certain brand should be used then that should be stipulated before you buy it! Some cats don't like change! So I am still fighting for my money back.. They obviously don't stand behind their product and don't care about unhappy customers!
