Where is the best place to buy Alnutrin from? I bought my first bag, the one that has the little packets of pre measured Alnutrin, from KnowWhatYouFeed.com I used up the last packets today so I'm good for awhile.

I buy from the company directly because I actually live very close to where they manufacture it so i get it really quickly. I like the pre-measure packets because I make a lot of smaller batches and buy meat in 1lbs chubs. Just my preference.

HT has the Alnutrin that comes with a scoop. Any advantages to that over the pre measured packets?

Using the scoop is convenient but it may not be as accurate as using a scale or the pre measured packets. Also the scoop from HT is for their recipes. If you use HT's meat and organs, you can use their scoop. But if you use knowwhatyoufeed (Alnutrin) recipes, you can use either the pre measured packets or using a scale.

Alnutrin from both HT and knowwhatyoufeed has the identical ingredients. It can be used with any recipes but please make sure that you add the correct amount of Alnutrin.

If you want to order from HT, there are coupons here:
Coupon code HNY-2016 for $10.00 off orders over $100.00 is still in effect till Feb 29th, 2016
Free shipping on non frozen foods on orders $30.00 or more FS-799 also good through Feb 29, 2016.

I've gotten mine from HT, but the price has gone up from about $19.97 to about $27, while at know-what-you -feed, it's still about $19.97, so in the future I may order from the manufacturer.

I don't know if anyone's still checking this thread, but I thought I'd pipe up. Hands down best place to buy is from the manufacturer, Alternative Nutrition (web site: KnowWhatYouFeed.com), which is still selling it for MUCH cheaper than Hare Today. Price ranges from $11.95 to $19.95 (depending on the size bag and whether you choose bulk or pre-measured packets). It's still $27 at Hare Today.

For $19.95 + $3.60 for shipping (3-5 days) I got enough Alnutrin for 44 lbs. of food. I didn't want the pre-packaged kind because it was more expensive (though not exorbitantly), and it's easy enough to weigh it correctly with a simple $10-20 kitchen scale from Walmart! I agree with another poster that scooping is probably not the best way to measure this stuff because you may be compressing it and using too much, or fluffing it and using too little, or making a more rounded scoop, or a more shallow one. There's so many ways to get a different amount! But a gram is a gram. Always. LOL

Even if you choose to use Hare Today's recipes, you can still do it without a scoop--and probably SHOULD. Just divide the total grams of the Alnutrin package size by the number of pounds Hare Today says the package will "treat" (stated in the various Alnutrin descriptions on the HT web site).

For example, I use the regular Alnutrin without added calcium because I feed ground meat, bones, and organs. Hare Today says the large 140g package of Alnutrin (the same one available on the Alternative Nutrition web site) is good for 35 lbs. of HT ground meat/bone/organ mix. So...

140 / 35 = 4     Thus, use 4 grams of Alnutrin per pound of ground meat/bone/organ (plus however much water it calls for).

I hope this helped someone. If not, I got some math practice. LOL

Happy Feeding!

@lovejoy444, I also ordered Alnutrin direct from the manufacturer due to the pricing difference.

I actually contacted Marta Kaspar (owner of Alnutrin) a while back, since I also feel more comfortable weighing out the supplement.  She told me that "one leveled Hare Today scoop is equivalent to 5.2 grams of Alnutrin with EggShell Calcium."

The scoops packaged with Alnutrin from Hare Today were designed specifically for the 4 pounds of ground boneless meat + 1 pound ground organ mix from Hare Today.  The directions state to use "6 level scoops Alnutrin with EggShell Calcium" (so 31.2 grams) with "4 lb ground raw meat [no bone]" and "1 lb ground organ mix with liver."

Alnutrin is a wonderful convenience and also really helpful for people just starting out with making cat food or making those 1 lb batches.  Just want to make people aware, though, of the homemade alternative which is half the cost and really easy to put together, depending on how much you pay for eggs.

I do buy loose taurine from Hare Today as opening up all those taurine capsules got a bit irritating.  The other ingredients are vitamin B complex, dry vitamin E, and Morton lite salt.  I did end up having to go to a Vitamin Shop to find the dry E.  Throwing those together in one of the jars used to store the food and cracking in an egg is quick and easy.  I add salmon oil at the same time - I get the Iceland unscented squirt bottle either from Hare Today or Amazon.  Honestly, the most time consuming step in food making is packing the finished food into jars and labeling for storage, so using Alnutrin wouldn't really make much difference.

I tend to make either 3 or 5 lb batches because meat/bone/organ grinds need to be supplemented with boneless meats, so there's no such thing as a 1 lb batch for me.  I guess you're using boneless meat and adding eggshell then?

@dorimon... Yes, I thought the Hare Today directions might vary according to the particular Alnutrin formula you needed (i.e. regular; with calcium; or with eggshell calcium). For the regular formula (w/o calcium, to be used with ground meat/bone/organs), it's one scoop per pound. Sorry if I confused anyone with my math problem above. LOL It was just an example that referred to the REGULAR Alnutrin (no calcium) and the meat/bone/organs grind.

Thanks for clarifying!

I would contact Marta to get a more accurate measurement if you aren't using the scoop, since the bag might not contain an exact whole number of servings.  Also, I'm not sure if the scoop is the same size, if the different supplements have different densities, etc.  Better safe than sorry :)
