Hello Everyone,

This is my first thread/post/comment on any website but after reading so much great information I thought I would post something more specific to my Oliver's condition.

This is a long post so Ill get to the point first, and if you are interested in reading Olivers story please read the specifics below..

My question is after 3 days of the baby food, water, and goats milk he still does not want to eat on his own, How long is it really safe to give a cat baby food? I read another thread of a woman syringe feeding her cat for 8 weeks to help him recover which I am willing to do however I do not want to do anything that would hurt my Oliver more than what he is already going through! Right now he likes the Turkey and Gravy flavor (no onions or onion powders of course).

Does anyone have any other recommendations as to what to feed him that will be able to go into a syringe other than baby food, goats milk, and water? I know that the Goats milk and water is okay but I am just trying to find another source of nutrition to give him to help him get back to his old self with more energy.

My Oliver turns 16 years old this year and I have had him since he was a very young kitten. He has had a very healthy life and was at a steady weight of 20-22 lbs most of his adult life - Large but healthy! Confirmed by Vet. About 5 years ago he suffered from an URI from our other cat Petrey (who unfortunately did not make it RIP Petey). He was able to fight off the infection after giving him the medications that were prescribed to him and he was back to normal within a few weeks. He has been healthy ever since just about a 2 weeks ago when I noticed that he was meowing a lot more, going to the cat box frequently, wasn't making a dent in his food, and had blood in his urine upon investigating his liter box. I immediately took him to the emergency vet clinic where they sampled his urine, tested his blood, and took an X-Ray. There was no crystals in the urine however the blood work showed slightly elevated kidney levels and abnormal looking kidneys and liver. They kept him over night to give him fluids through an IV and I was able to pick him up the following day. I was completely devastated and worried to see that he was not doing very well after taking him home. He was prescribed the K/D formula of cat food and ate that for just two days before his congestion and sneezing flared up (Per the Vet the URI will return if immune system is not up to speed and never actually goes away.) He became very immobile, not wanting to move from his kitty bed unless to use the liter box (which he has been every 7-9 hours or so), and sneezed here and there and I could hear that his nose was very congested. I have tried literally every single type of food imaginable - Wet food (every kind imaginable), Kibbles, canned tuna, canned salmon, baby foods, warming the food in the microwave just slightly, boiling organic chicken with no seasoning, pretending to eat and like his food, even shaking his treat bag which usually always prompts a quick response, and nothing would peek his interest. He lapped at the tuna a few evenings but beside that, he was going on 3 days with no substantial amount of food. I also set up a humidifier next to his bed and gave him the infant "Little Noses" nose drops every 8-12 hours. I read many threads and decided that I would try to obtain Raw Goats Milk and quickly contacted a Farm in a town near mine and was able to get some the following day. Before I had picked the Goats Milk up out of desperation I purchased a syringe and meat flavored baby food again. I heated the baby food for 10 second and used the syringe to feed it to him. To my surprise he did not resist and actually just kept lapping it up with his tongue - Even licking the syringe after it was gone! I was so relieved and happy that he had something in his stomach for the medications that I had stopped giving him due to his no appetite (per vets instructions) and after I had purchased the goat milk I ran home to give that a try. Again, he did not have any interest to try it on his own in the bowl or small saucer. I filled up the syringe and gave him about 9ml of the goat milk in addition to 3-6ml of water, 12ml of the baby food mixed with water, and at last about an hour later started him again on his antibiotics now that he had food in his stomach. I gave him a lot of love and put his favorite blanket next to him and shut the door and went to bed (Set up his kitty bed outside of my bedroom door next to humidifier in fear he would hide under my bed or closet and not want to get out) . I woke the next morning to give him more of the routine and he took everything quite well even his medicine! I also checked his liter box and he had went #1 and left a small #2! Which he has done just once since hes been home from the vet (about a week now). Praying this regime will help restore his energy and health back to normal! Any suggestions are appreciated!!!!

Go back to you vet and get some Hills a/d. It's designed for sick cats with no appetite, and is high calorie and nutrient dense. It might be stinky/yummy enough to tempt your boy to eat on his own. If not, it can be thinned a little with goat milk or water for syringe feeding.

The lack of appetite is largely down to the blocked nose - scent is very closely linked with eating for cats, and it's very common for URI patients to go off their food.

It's sounds like you're doing really well with him, and the fact that he's interested in the food when you're syringing him is a great sign.

Sending mega :vibes: for a speedy recovery :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Thank you Columbine! I had not heard of that before for helping with a poor appetite so I will most definitely give it a shot! Thank you for your kind information!

I am glad your baby is under the care of a vet. Columbine gave you some great advice,

I am not sure if this is something you have tried but it has been helpful for my cats when they have had URI's. I use the steam room treatment with my cats. Run the shower as hot as you can and sit in the steamy bathroom with Oliver for 2-3 times a day for 15-20 minutes. One of my cats found this so helpful that after the 1st time I did this he started demanding it on his own until he felt better.
