Swollen Bottom Lip HELP

Bruiser is a 9 month old Himalayan/persian mix. Some back ground: he is up to date on all shots, he receives revolution monthly, I feed him natural balance kitten formula canned food, he eats out of glass bowls with fresh water daily and we comb his hair daily as well. We use the purina pro plan dust free litter and scoop daily.

About a week ago I noticed his bottom lip beginning to look a bit red. Since then is has swelled. He is eating, drinking and being his normal goofy self as usual but it looks painful. I am not sure if he chewed on something and the lip is raw, or if it an ulcer of some sort (I read online). I am not sure if taking him to the vet right away is overreacting since he is acting normal. I would just like to know if anyone has seen this before and if it will go away on its own or not.

Thank you so much for any advice!

Hi BruiserBear,

I found with my cat Marley, a swollen bottom lip was the result of drink and eating food out of a plastic countainer. For some reason some cats have what I consider to be some sort of allergic reaction to the plastic.  Does Bruiser play with any plastic toys? It could also be the result of being too rough with the toy.  Marleys bottom lip swelling went away in about 2 weeks, which was good, we also changed his dishes to ceramic ones and deep clean on a daily basis. If you feel that this is not the reason of an interaction with plastic, and he has other symptoms then I would take him to the vet immediately.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you for replying! Yes he has ceramic bowls as well. He has a million toys but mainly plays with his soft kong animals that are stuffed with catnip. I will have to put away the plastic ones, that didn't even occur to me! He does play rough and seems to chew on anything thats in front of him thats why I don't want to overreact and spend unnecessary money at the vet, but on the other hand the lip looked a lot like the pictures I saw of rodent ulcers online. I am going to keep a close eye on it the next few days and if anything gets worse I will take him in. Thanks so much for your advice!

My Chessy had the exact same thing once. I don't think he had plastic bowls. The vet told me not to worry about it, and it went away after a couple weeks. I still don't know what caused it.
