HiccupKitty
Hi all! This is my first post on this site, and I'm really hoping for some peace of mind!

On Friday (5 days ago), I brought my 5 year old recently adopted rescue Hiccup, in for her dental. Her liver profile was just a tiny bit high, but the vet and I decided it was safe to go ahead with the dental anyway.

Fortunately no extractions were necessary, but I'm concerned that my cat isn't quite herself yet. She's eating okay but not drinking as much water, though that might be due to the fact that I've been softening her food with water. I'm noticing lethargy, very large pupils, exaggerated jumpiness sometimes at things I can't see, more attention meowing than usual, more rubbing of the cheeks than usual, and rolling back and forth on her back. Her stools are a little loose but I assume that's from her antibiotics (clinisol clindamycin).

Any thoughts or suggestions before I make an appointment to bring her back to the vet? It's so difficult because there's nothing overtly wrong- she just isn't back to normal and I'm not sure why.

The dental visit was 5 days ago?  How was Hiccup acting when  you brought her home? What pain medication was given?   Is she eating? Playing, pooping, etc? Antibiotics can definitely cause a GI upset.  The jumpiness and lethargy does sound off though... I would call your vet  and ask but you know your kitty best; if something seems off, I would get it checked out.

I'm wondering if Hiccup is on Buprenex for pain? If her dose is on the high end, this could certainly be causing the issues you are seeing.

Regardless, it is never a bad idea to consult your vet when something seems off or you have a concern. If you feel her symptoms are getting worse contact your vet ASAP or consult with an emergency clinic if something happens over night.

She isn't on any pain meds- though I'm sure they gave her something on Friday because she was super loopy when I brought her home.

I would call the vet and tell them what is going on.   I tend to be a nervous nellie and call anytime one of my kitties are acting differently.  They usually have me bring the kitty in for a check.  Often when something isn't right a kitty simply has a different behavior that doesn't really correlate with whatever the issue is.

I agree about.at least calling the Vet. You should probably take her in for a recheck.

Okay, thanks for that advice everyone! Her energy seemed higher this morning, so I'll check on her when I get home from work and if she's back to how she was this weekend I'll bring her in for sure. Again, I'd be more worried if she wasn't eating or pooping, but she's doing that okay, it's just her behavior that hasn't quite been back to normal.

Should I be concerned that the vet didn't give us pin meds? They cleaned off impacted tartar that had built up from wherever she was before I rescued her, but did not extract any teeth. As of now she's just on antibiotics.

They may have given her a long acting pain medication. I think they do have that.

If not, then ask about it....

I still think it would be a good thing to talk to the Vet and air your concerns.

So cats take surgical procedures differently than others. It would be good to document it in her chart, if this was from the dental...

Thank you for your responses everyone!

I took Hiccup back to the vet last week, we stopped the antibiotic and voila! My kitty is my kitty again! I'm so relieved!
