I have two new cats (4 and 8 months old).  My former cat was on diabetic management food for 4 years, so I never had to deal with so much food testing & switching. Due to having a diabetic cat (who was also overweight prior to that) I really want these two on a good diet from the start.

I've been giving the older guy a variety of foods ranging from Core to Blue Buffalo Wilderness.  I try to get the older one to eat the adult food and the young one to eat Royal Canin instinctive - but they both like Royan Canin (the kitten one which is $2.50 for 3 oz...yikes).  It's ok for now, since they are both under a year, but what is really annoying me is that he will like a food one day and then the next time,  smell it and walk away...even if it's 5 days later.

This is just wasting so much food and money (though usually the kitten will eat it except in rare cases... (e.g., grain free purina which made him run away very fast).

What is the deal with this? Is he just not hungry & roaming around pretending to act hungry or something?  I thought that was the issue, but when I put down Royal Canin after a refusal to eat BB Red Meat Feast (which he loved last time) he ate that up pretty fast.

They also won't eat their dry food if I leave it out past 24 hours.  I don't know if the oils are turning bad on the plate or what. I have to throw it all out with the plate & then put a new plate down.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm not really sure? Maybe they don't like those foods very much. I'm not a fan of Royal Canin or BB, i think there are much better foods to choose from. There are a lot of foods available so the best thing to do is to go to Petco or an independent pet food store a buy some cans to try out. Popular choices are Nutro natural choice, Weruva, Tikicat, Merrick, Soulistic (available only a Petco) on the lower end Fancy Feast classic.

In terms of dry food I don't recommend leaving food out for longer than 24 hours anyway. I leave kibble out for a few hours and throw away whatever isn't eaten as that kibble has saliva on it and is growing bacteria so leaving it out isn't good. I also only buy kibble in small bags, kibble goes stale really quickly so its important to store it in some kind of sealed air tight container once you open the bag.

Thank you.  I have been trying to get a good calorie per dollar ratio, and solstic and merrick are a lot more expensive (per calorie).  I did buy a few of their cans though.  They didn't like grammy's pot pie, but I have a few others

Are all FF classics pate?  I was just in petsmart today trying to figure this out, and I couldn't find flaked/minced classic.  The older guy does not seem to like any pate...but I've been told by a few sources that only classic is ok.

I usually keep dry food in gladware (the throwaway kind).   So, I guess it's fresh.  They are fine with older food that has been kept in the gladware or in the bag actually for now (i'm on a new bag).  They must be smelling something on the food after it has been left out...like stale prey or something.  I wouldn't leave it for days on end, but it's strange to wake up & see food left - and it's food they won't touch.  The second I put down new food, he's all over it (the big one - the little kitten is less sensitive).  My old cat always finished everything & it was closely monitored - so it's all new (and having 2 is a little complicated).

Do you think timed feeders are a bad idea then?  The food won't stay fresh really in those canisters (i think?) - As soon as I got these guys figured out, I was going to use a timed feeder to give about 1/3-1/2 of their calories as dry food...mostly for budget and scheduling reasons....and then the rest would be wet.

My cats only like the Merrick LID chicken and turkey but they are pate. The chicken however is a very soft pate so that might be an option even though your cat doesn't like pate.

I do think all the FF classics are pate. I know the classic chicken and turkey and giblet are pate.

You might try Nutro natural choice sliced or minced varieties if your guy doesn't like pate, you can find those at Petco and they're very reasonably priced.

I use timed feeders when I'm out of town for short periods of time, but other than that I don't use them because I don't really need to. They work for some people, I just prefer to feed my cats rather than use a machine for it. I think if i was using a feeder regularly I would refill it often rather than leave a large amount of food in it.

My cat is exactly the same, one day he loves it, next day he doesn't. I have tried every foood out there that i can find. The only food that he won't turn away and eat every bite is Royal Canin and Max cat. So i decided to stick with these two brands. I feel that as long as he is eating, it is better than him walking away and not eating it. Royal canin is very expensive, but at least he is eating it and i am not throwing money away

I tried giving Nala Ava Marie a bite of my scrambled eggs, which one time she liked. She was staring at me while I was eating so I thought she wanted a bite. She sniffed it and turned her nose up at it!
