people can also from their user options

Show user's signatures in their posts? yes no
Show user's avatar in their posts? yes no
Show image attachments and code in Posts? yes no
Selecting no will show a hyperlink instead.

that can speed up load times for those who dont wish to see the pics

I was reading through the link Anne gave us, and I think that discussion was kind of confusing. In that link there is also some discussion about having a recommended pixel size for signature pics, but nothing definite was ever decided. IMO, not everyone understands size if you only talk about kb, so also talking about the size in pixels might help. BTW, what is 30kb in pixels???

Lorie, it depends on the resolution, the dpi (dots per inch), etc. An animated GIF is a lot larger in KB than a JPG image of the same size in pixels. So there isn't really a formula for how pixels translate into KB. The size suggestion is that your signature shouldn't be larger than a business card, and with the image around 30 KB. It is confusing, I'll definitely agree with you on that!

No worries - you guys are right. The suggested size is 30KB as stated in the Rules. Anne's so busy with two kids and getting back to working, I'm sure it was just an honest mistake.
Well aren't you guys glad you have me around to remind you?

Darn, this is just great.
I was planning to put my girls' pics in my signature. Please clarify the KB preference before I enroll with the image server and then find out I am over the KB limit.

Sorry about the confusion! The rules do say 30KB - I just had a peek at the thread where this issue was discussed and I saw 12KB and went ahead and posted...

I actually think smaller is even kinder. Yes, users can turn signatures off, but wouldn't you like it if everyone could see your signatures? after all that's why they're there. With a good quality photo editor you can resize files without losing a lot of quality, at least for web presentation. The loss of quality really affects printed images more. If you're using Photoshop, just click on "save for web" and choose a lower quality of image. More often than not, you won't be seeing any loss of quality in the image.

Also, please remember the call card size thing - it was means to include text and images together! And it means the height of the total space of your signature should be no more than the height (not width) of a call card. This is just a rule of thumb (is that the expression?). I don't plan on editing anyone's signature unless they're waaaaaaaay too long. Just something to consider for the benefit of our fellow members and visitors.

And yes Sicy, I know that some mods also have signatures that do not comply with the rules
they are also members like the rest of you ya know

I'm a dial-up user on an old computer. Oddly TCS loads faster than any site I go to. Some takes several minuets. As for signatures...everyone here in this thread: your signatures loaded about as fast as the page loaded. The only problem I ever notice here is that it takes a long time for uploaded images to load. all the sigs, text, and avatars will be, but the image in the post takes forever. It is good though that there are size limits because there are those who would abuse the privilage if there was no limit. I agree that 12 is too small.

Speaking as a mod who is oversized in her sig- my apologies. It was custom-made for me, and I had no idea how big it was, so now that I know, I will just say it is under construction and I hope to get it reduced.

Ok I'm legal now! Thank you sicy for pointing that out to me. Kim made my hissy and I love it- but I had no idea how big it was. Also it was made prior to the rules changing.
But kim optimized it this morning- thanks Kim!

Funny - I never had problems with your sig loading, MA, and I'm dial-up. I fixed my sig (the description of one of the sites fell over onto a third line
).

Deb, yours is only around 18kb, so I think you are safe.

To check the size of the images in your signature, right click on the image, choose Properties. One of the properties is Size, displayed in bytes. For example, Cathi's signature image is 12275 bytes, or 12.275 Kilobytes (KB), which is well within the 30 KB suggestion.

As for height, that's really just something you can eyeball. If it looks about the same height as a business or calling card, then you're fine (approx. 2 inches or 5 centimeters).
