Is baking soda harmful to cats?

Large amounts of baking soda can be toxic to cats so I would be very careful about doing this.   I think it would depend on how much you were using and how long you were letting it sit on the carpet.   You don't want your cat rolling in it or inhaling it.

I had planned to sprinkle some of the carpet and vacuum up immediately.

That should be fine.  It's in many carpet deodorizers and if you are vacuuming, the cat will probably not stay in the room anyhow.  Mine hate the vacuum cleaner!
They will be very far away from the vacuum monster

This is so familiar...if I want Hekitty to stay out of a room for a while, I just park the vacuum in the middle of it for a while.  No need to turn on.
