Hi there, not sure if this is a good section for this but anyways. I appreciate some help. I got one of those strainer litter boxes. Where it comes in three pieces.. Two bottom pans and a strainer piece that is used to pick up the soiled litter. I really love the idea, but I find that the litter.. Especially the pee soiled litter tends to stick and gets caught in the strainer and it's really tough to keep clean! I use regular clumping litter. I was thinking maybe the crystals would be make it better? Does anyone have any suggestions.

I find that most of these "energy saving" devices create more work than they save.  The one type of litter that works well with a strainer type box is Feline Pine, not the new clumping Feline Pine (which I have not yet tried, so cannot judge one way or the other) but the regular old feline pine that is pelletized.  It starts out as pellets but as they get wet from the urine, it becomes sawdust, and if you shake the strainer a little, the sawdust falls down into the second box below, which can be dumped every day or every few days.  You do not lift clumps out with the screen -- it is the opposite, the screen allows the used litter that has turned into sawdust to fall down into the box below.  The cat urine in the box could also pass down and be soaked up by the sawdust in the box below, so I would not suggest going too long without dumping the lower box.  As for the tootsie rolls, you simply scoop those out with a litter scooper and either flush them down the toilet or else put them in a bag and toss them outside in the garbage can.

For clumping litter, personally I use a multicat version which clumps extra hard (so the clumps are not broken up by the next cat that digs in the box).  It's possible that one of these might work with your sifter device, but if the litter is not deep enough or if your cat digs down to the screen, it is bound to gum up the screen.  Scoop Away Multi-Cat makes extremely hard clumps and is more dust free than most clay litters I have tried.

Perhaps someone else will come along who has mastered this strainer technique with litter and can give you more advice.  In the meantime, try another litter and see if it works any better, or try the feline pine.   I know that Feline Pine used to make a liitter box with a screen specifically designed to work as explained above, and my daughter has used it for years.

Thanks for the reply. And I agree right now it is making more work than what it needs to be. I just like that since you're constantly moving the litter around it does tend to last longer I find. I'll try a different litter.

A better way to use the sifter-type boxes is to keep the sifter between the 2 boxes---don't keep it in the box while the cats are using it. When you want to scoop, just pick up the top box and pour the litter through the sifter, then pull the sifter out and put it in between the 2 boxes again (after cleaning the empty box, if necessary). Works a lot better that way!
