I need to find a new probiotic for my two cats, specifically for my IBD Molly. (I'm posting this question via the raw forum bc I think I remember a few raw feeders using Nexabiotic.)

I have been using Wholistic Feline Digest the last couple of months, however, WFD contains fructo-oligosacchirides - FOS, a sugary prebiotic (30g), that apparently is best to avoid giving to IBD cats.

I'm not able to search now via TCS for Nexabiotic info, sorry if this is a duplicate.

Also, which Nexabiotic specifically -- regular or advanced?

Any other probiotic recommendations, especially for an IBD kitty who is partially raw and canned fed, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Never mind Nexabiotic, just read it contains maltodextrin, one of the reasons I stopped Synacore probiotic, recommended by our vet.

Lisa, if you want just a bacterial probiotic with no additives, high quality, and a good selection of strains, Renew Life is an excellent choice, the Renew Life Ultimate Flora, 15bn CFU.

But for IBD, it really helps to include an S boulardii probiotic. Renew Life has one... there are two... Advanced Immunity has Larch something or another in it, but the do have a plain S boulardii.

Excellent thanks!

Yes, most definitely S. boulardi as that's what is recommended via IBDkitties.net.

I was hoping to just have one bottle with both strains of acidophilus and S. boulardi, but again - given that Molly's IBD is severe, I don't want to risk the maltodextrin and the other added oil in Nexabiotic.

Thanks again, much appreciated. :)

The Renew Life 15bn CFU doesn't require refrigeration.  Shouldn't probiotics ideally be refrigerated to maintain the efficacy and potency of the live cultures?

LisaMarie12, did you end up trying the Renew Life? I would like to try this for my Buster, however, does he need to take the whole capsule?  He is 10 months old, weighs 8 lbs. If the prescribed dose is less than the whole capsule, it looks like these capsules are enteric coated and if they are taken out of their capsule they will be destroyed in the stomach? Thanks for any information

Actually, I ended up ordering Nexabiotic after all. I decided to go ahead and risk the small amount of maltodextrin, it's just easier to have both strains - the s. boulardi, mixed in with the other strains rather than two separate bottles.

I also read that info re: stomach acid and the broken capsule on the Nexabiotic faq page and I was a bit hesitant at first.  I talked with another TCS member about that though. She's been using Nexabiotic for all of her cats, including kittens. She said she's had success with Nexabiotic, that when she doesn't use it there are problems in the kitty box but that otherwise it seems to be working fine.

I'm not sure yet what the dose is, I'll have to check the link above again that LDG sent.
