We adopted Nancy last week and she is a gorgeous tortoiseshell and we believe about 7 months to a year old (that's what the RSPCA have told us.) she's still quite tiny so still looks like a kitten to us!
She was taken in to the RSPCA as her previous owners weren't allowed pets in their rented accommodation, so she wasn't a stray or hasn't been mistreated or anything. Totally healthy and has been neutered etc etc. She was super friendly when we went to see her, and really affectionate.

When we bought her home she was like the dream cat- trotted around the house purring, jumping up on our laps for cuddles, playing and eating all ok, litter tray being used and also the scratching post too. She sleeps downstairs at night but in the morning she will come up to our room and get in bed for cuddles and sleeping on my chest, still putting and very gentle and calm.

I know it's only been a week, but as the week has gone on, she's suddenly got far more aggressive. She's biting our hands when we go to stroke her and now much more in that "darting around with huge pupils, ready to pounce at anything that moves" mood. This morning she jumped up on me literally just to bite my hand and start scratching my arm and ran away again. Everything that moves is now being attacked!

We're playing with her loads (the toy on a string type) to try and tire her out and she's got lots of space to run around so it's not like she's cooped up and frustrated. She's not allowed outside yet.
We're also aware of the tell tale signs of too much petting - but she doesn't really give any signs. I think a lot of the time it is her playing, but she has really sharp teeth and claws! When we tell her "No" or back off and ignore her- she sees this as a game and her pupils get massive and she gets more crazy!

She's not like this all of the time, just episodes and they are sporadic so one minute she is all calm and snuggling (I'm writing this with her on my chest asleep!) and the next she will be clamped down on our arm with the teeth and claws out.

any suggestions would be much appreciated as I don't want a scratching and biting kitty and we love her so much!

Honestly, it's really just a phase. She wants to wrestle with you. She'll outgrow it given time and patience. I've seen others here with some good suggestions for letting her know you don't want to play like this. They include crying out to let her know it hurts and then walking away and ignoring her for a bit. Personally, I'll push Hecate down with an open hand across her head and neck for a few moments until she stops struggling and then ignoring her. Not hard enough to hurt. Just enough to securely keep her laying down and "stuck". I've seen adult cats use a similar technique with rambunctious kittens. With time, she'll learn her boundaries. She's just very young and very energetic. It's "hunting practice".

My tortie does the big eye crazy run. I will use a dangly toy to help burn energy. she probably wants to play thats why she is jumping at your hands.

she is very pretty

Have a toy in range at all times. When she attacks your had you show her the toy and lure her to play with it. This should work. She wants to play and she will end up seeing your hands as toys if you don't stop her. Yelling and scaring them never works on the long run, showing her the toy each time she goes for you will teach her you are not the toy. You should watch My cat from hell, the guy making the show is the best cat behaviorist I saw. If you follow his advice you will have an awesome cat.

This is normal kitten behavior....my 5 month old acts just like this a few times a day. If he gets "bitey" I stop playing with him. He's started doing it less and less. Good luck with your beautiful kitten!!
