Hello All,

Does anyone know of an antibacterial cat litter? Reiki has been responding all right to chemo, except for one occasion (and a very scary one at that) when she suffered septic shock from some strange protozoa that we couldn't trace. Normally, this protozoa wouldn't have been an issue for a cat, but it was able to attack as Reiki's immune system is highly impacted by chemo. This being said, I know the litter box is one main source of bacteria and other infectious agents, and we are trying to avoid this occurring again! Any recommendations? Also, I have 3 cats and an automatic litter box that scoops when the cats use it, so frequent scooping is happening, still worried about bacteria though! Thanks so much in advance!

Your question raised my curiosity so I did a search and only found one brand available in the US:  Okocat.  It's made from ground up coniferous wood pellets - the antibacterial effect is said to be a natural one associated with coniferous wood.   Here's an amazon link but it's available at many pet supply stores.

I've never used this so can't recommend it personally - hopefully someone who has used it will pipe in with their experience.  It looks like it isn't suitable for an automatic litter box, though so it might not work for you.

There are other brands advertised on UK sites, e.g. Sanicat but I couldn't find them in the U.S.

I'm really sorry about Reiki.  I hope he continues to do well.
