Grieving cat

We put down our cat this weekend Sat. We had him for about 10 years with our other cat that is still with us that we've had for 12 years. He had lymphoma and got too weak so we ended his suffering. My question is about the cat that we still have - his behavior the last couple of days around our dog. We've had our dog with the cats for 5 years. This cat was never really fond of the dog but has gotten close to the dog before and would sniff or head butt him when they're both by me or my husband. Yesterday I was sitting on the couch dog laying beside me and petting the cat on my lap. The cat then bit the dogs snout. I yelled at him and the cat ran away. Tonight the same thing happened but before I could say or do anything the dog growled back and the cat ran away. This hasn't happened before that we know of. Could it be because the cat is grieving or the cat is protecting me or trying to dominate the dog? Not sure what to think. Well just have to keep an eye in them. Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm so sorry for your loss!  :(

I have not experienced this before but there are a lot of people on here that could probably share their experiences.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

There is always a pecking order in a multi pet household. Was the cat who passed the alpha? This sounds to me like the cat that you still have is trying to claim the alpha spot over the dog. I have 3 cats and a dog. The smallest of my cats is Lilith. She is definitely the alpha in our house and never hesitates to remind everyone else who the queen is. She is about 5 pounds. My dog is about 40.

It could be that or the cat could be lashing out because he just didn't want to share your attention at that point and wanted the dog to know it. I'd keep an eye on them. If things get worse, you might want to do a reintroduction. This is not an uncommon thing to have to do. http://www.thecatsite.com/a/introducing-cats-to-dogs

You can also try Feliway diffusers or sprays or a calming collar or treats fore the cat. Hopefully, it's just a phase and part of the grieving process and things will calm down soon.
