The reason we put Monte on Prozac is because he had a few incidents with redirected aggression where he attacked our other cat and myself.
I've been thinking about asking my vet about prozac for our Bengal Rocky that is aggressive to all our other cats, but she only attacks my other older girl cat Grey. She'll upstairs and pick fights with her. Grey wont even come downstairs anymore because of it. My house is pretty big so it's not like she's confined to a small space, but nothing is really working to get Rocky to stop being aggressive and it's been an ongoing problem for more than 2 years.

If you do, please let us know how it works!

Prozac might work very well for Rocky's aggression. You should consult your vet to see if Prozac would be a good option for her.

I can only speak from my own experience with my almost 12 year old male cat Monte. Before Prozac, he had 3 or 4 instances with redirected aggression, where he attacked my other cat and myself. He actually bit my leg pretty badly. We tried the Feliway spray and diffuser, which did not work very well for us.
Monte's been on Prozac for 2 and a half years and we haven't had even one incident with aggression since he's been on Prozac. We also did not see any side effects with Monte on Prozac. It didn't change his personality in any way other than making him more nicer and affectionate.
I have a 12 year old son who's always following Monte around and paying more attention to him than he'd care for and Monte is still quite patient with him.
I remember one incident way before Monte was on Prozac, when my son was 5 or 6. He had tripped and fallen near the couch and Monte heard my son crying and then he proceeded to swat quite hard on my son's head. I guess the crying set him off.

Let me know if you have any other questions.:kitty2:

Psycho has been on Fluoxetine for 6 years. He s 8 now and we ve been weaning him off for 10 days now. I thought it was time as he is getting older and has the beginning of renal insufficiency. Originally he was put on it for anxiety and e cessive yowling all night. The only side effect I was was his appetite declined over the years. Since I started weaning him it seems he has more appetite and he seems a little mote alert.

Does Prozac make appetite diminish in cats? Of course in Maple's case that wouldn't be such a bad thing - she's quite a big girl. Her blood work came back perfect so physically, she's doing great for a cat that's a few days shy of 14.

I'm not sure how long it takes to kick in. She's been on it 4 or 5 days now. She isn't going poop all over the house now, it's been limited to the towel, as is the pee. I don't know for sure if she's been using the litter box or not. I'll have to do another trial run of locking her in the bedroom for a few hours.

Every cat is different but he was 10 lbs when he went On it and then over the years his weight fluctuated around 9 lbs. It took about 8 weeks until it kicked but the yowling stopped. He ll be done with it next Thursday and then we ll see how it goes.
I think it s a good product with the least amount of side effects. Best of luck with your little one.

My Basil (aka The Beezer, whose photo lurking in the greenery adorns this message), has been on Prozac for aggression issues for years.  He was initially on 2.5 mg a day (he's about 9 lbs), and after much trial and error (no dice with compounded liquid of any flavor, and the transdermal stuff didn't work), it helped enormously.  It mellowed him just enough; the violent and utterly unpredictable attacks aimed at my innocent Italian Greyhound stopped.  He remained a volatile, emotional cat, but one we could live with and continue to love.  The only side effect we noted was a slight tendency to portliness, but he's also on S/O canned food for bladder troubles, which is pretty rich stuff, so we reduced his food just a bit and he's been good.  After a couple of years, we tried tapering him off it (slowly and with vet supervision), but a month or so after we got him off it altogether, he started being weird and testy and "Beezerish" again, so we resumed.  He's 10 now, and about 6 months ago we noticed he seemed a little depressed, sleeping more, and not as affectionate (Yes! He IS!).  He was pronounced in otherwise fine health, so we reduced the Prozac to 2.5 mg every other day, and he's doing great: still emotional and sensitive, but calm, cheerful, loving, and not crazy.  Long-term Prozac saved his life, as rehoming to a one-pet-only household or euthanasia seemed our only options.  He is healthy, happy, still very much himself, and not attacking anyone.   I am grateful for better living through chemistry in this case!

It's great to hear a success story! Beezer sounds like quite a character!
My cat Monte actually lost weight on Prozac because he wasn't eating so much due to anxiety.

I'm gonna be picking up a prescription for Prozac for Maple in a few. I'm curious if there are any side effects in cats that I need to watch out for. I've been on it myself, plus I work in the pharmacy industry, so VERY well aware of side effects in humans. Are there any that cats typically experience with it though? Long-term or short-term?

I completely forgot to ask my vet all these questions unfortunately. I'm still giving it to her regardless, but I like to know if there's anything I should look out for. I imagine if there was anything potentially bad he would have mentioned it (eg, the potential reactions cats have to methimazole).
Phone him and ask him to put your mind at rest.

I am looking more I think for real experience if anyone has it. Usually that's what I ask my vet for too. If no one does that I will definitely call him by tomorrow. I'm not super-worried about it. Diarrhea makes me a little nervous - omg, I hope not, since she's still not 100% using the litter box!

Also, is anyone aware of whether or not it has a bad taste? I can put it in her food, but I'm nervous about her not eating all of it, so would like to put it in a pill pocket. She'd love more treats! Sara eats pill pockets with Pepcid but I question whether she has a sense of taste these days. My vet is giving her a "normal" cat dose for now, to see how it works, but she's a 17 lb kitty so really want to make sure she gets all of it.
Are you still taking it or have any left to taste? ,stupid question I know.

My cat Monte has been on Prozac (Fluoxetine) for the past 2 and a half years. He takes one 5mg pill in a pill pocket every morning. He weighs just under 17 lbs.

The reason we put Monte on Prozac is because he had a few incidents with redirected aggression where he attacked our other cat and myself. Monte was a very anxious cat. He would constantly pace up and down the house and it seemed like he was constantly eating due to his anxiety. Little things would startle him and he was so jumpy before the Prozac. He also did not get good restful sleep. He always seemed tired all the time. He was 19 lbs when we first started him on 7mg of Prozac. We have since reduced his dose to 5mg.

Since Monte has been on Prozac he is more calm. He eats less. He has lost 2lbs. He sleeps throughout the night without any problems. He seems more happy and playful.

I Haven't seen any negative aspect to Monte being on Prozac and I would recommend it when everthing else is not working as well.
I used to take it myself!!!!

She's been back on it again since last Tuesday or Wednesday now. So there are more left to taste, although I don't think I'd want to taste them, lol.

One thing she's doing that may or may not be different, not sure. She is peeing a LOT and it comes out with some force! It's on the towel still but the sound of it is literally waking me up in the morning! Anything that sounds like that tends to because I'm terrified of my room flooding again (did twice already) and the last two days, I've heard little waterfalls coming out of Maple. She's not really drinking any more than she used to so that makes me feel a little better. Now it's possible that has always been how it sounded, and I never heard it before. Been sleeping a lot lighter lately too.

Now, it would be nice if she'd actually go in the litter box and pee!

Me? No. I take other stuff. It's years since I took it and it didn't help me.
Why is she not using the litter box.

Are you still taking it

I know it's for the kitty. I meant if you had any left over you could taste them. Did they help you?

I have noooo desire to taste them, lol. They helped at one time in my life but I can't take them anymore. I wish I could! Bad side effects though. Oh well.

I think today might be a week she's been on it. Still not using litter box. :sigh:

You know that Prozac aren't the only anti depressants in the world. My shrink tried plenty till we came up with the right combination.

Poor kitty and you why won't she use the box?

Dunno. Ruled out the physical stuff, now we're down to the mental stuff. She definitely has anxiety issues so trying to help with that.
