Do you make/buy doughnuts for Doughnut Day?

My MIL called me yesterday afternoon to remind me that tomorrow (Tuesday) is Doughnut Day and was I making doughnuts? Well, I highly doubt it, since I'm probably working tomorrow. But I told her I'd really try to make doughnuts for her this weekend. If I make them Saturday morning, we can run some in to her on Saturday night, while they're still fresh.

I found out that she was complaining to Rick's sister that it's been "a long time since Pam brought me any cookies!". Well, probably about 3 weeks. I made some chocolate chip cookies the other weekend when we had that snowstorm and we took some into her that Monday night because we spent the day Sunday digging out a bit.

Is anybody else making doughnuts? Or buying doughnuts?

No doughnuts. While the dog would love some (she adores sweets), I'm not a big doughnut person (I didn't even know doughnut day was a thing). I won't be buying any just for the dog.

If you are Polish, the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent) (Fat Tuesday) is also known as Paczki day...they are kind of like Jelly donuts will with some great stuff...more dense than a regular donut....

Apricot, prune (great taste), thick raspberry, yum....

Isn't every day doughnut day?

That reminds me, Tom was lucky enough to get his mom's homemade doughnut recipe before she passed.  We really should try it out already!

I'm going to pick up donuts on the way to the shelter tomorrow. Donuts on Shrove Tuesday are a real German tradition.

I've also heard it called "Pancake Day".

Now I want donuts!

I'm of Irish descent. We don't have donut day.  Probably some kind of potato tradition.

That explains why the paczki our grocery store sells are featured in the flyer this week.

I've never heard it called donut day before. I won't be eating any unfortunately.

Yes, Paczki Day started out in Poland as a traditional the Thursday before Lent began; Ash Wednesday. It was when the wives used up all their older pantry stocks, in anticipation for Lent.

In the United States, it is celebrated on the Tuesday before Lent (Ash Wednesday).

Paczki are different from a regular jelly donut because they are much richer. They are made with eggs, milk, flour, milk, cream, yeast, etc....

They are more of a cake-bread like consistency -----so delicious. Once you have one you will never be happy with a regular jelly donut..

I got a box of Packzis at the supermarket.  I know they probably aren't traditional but they are good.  We don't have a large Eastern European population here so no bakeries that do traditional treats from that part of the world.

Many places in the world call it Pancake day with pancakes being traditional for today.

I've never heard of it, either and rarely eat donuts.  I probably like get 2-3 a year.

I like the chocolate donuts filled with bavarian cream. If I can't find those, I like the ones with white frosting and some kind of candy on them. So good!

You may have heard of it as Fat Tuesday.  It's the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.  The idea being it's the last day to eat whatever you want and in old tradition it's the way to use up the last of things like sugar and lard before Lent begins.

The official Catholic name for it is Shrove Tuesday but that term has a different meaning. It's supposed to be the day for people to take stock of their life, decide what they are giving up for Lent and what they need to work on during Lent.
