My mom has allergies but my whole life we have had cats, she just lives with it and knows what she can and can't do with them. I think you are right, they must have some horrible reason but make up allergies as an excuse!
I have a cat-hair allergy and still have a cat, because I can cope with it. However, I do have to speak up in defense of people who really do develop problems at a later point in life. I have a friend who developed life-threatening asthma at 35, after adding a second cat. She refused to believe the various doctors' conclusions until she almost died from an asthma attack. About the same time, my brother died of an asthma attack, which the ME decided was caused by cat hair (a new neighbor had 3 Persians, and the apartment building had hot-air heating, which circulated allergans, etc, throughout the building), so she decided to take it seriously. At that point, she and her husband moved to a new home, and restricted the cats to one part of the house, rather than give them up. My mom developed severe asthma at 60, after going through menopause. She refuses to give up her pets (2 dogs and a cat), which I can understand, but she really suffers for it. While I believe that a lot of people "fake" allergies in order to get rid of unwanted pets, I don't believe that that's always the case, and I know from experience that allergies can cost you your life.
