...with the cats...
Good afternoon!

yesterday i did my monthly shopping. with myself and three cats, there's quite a bit i buy to get us all through the next 5-6 weeks! i do order cat food online, but i buy cat litter when i go shopping (at actual 'brick and mortar' stores). so unloading everything (from the car), and then storing it all properly, can be good physical exertion for me.

so with these thoughts on my mind, for today's Question of the Day...

Do you exercise? And, do you get your exercise by itself (like jogging, treadmill, walking, cycling, swimming, going to a gym, and etc) or do you get it in your daily/weekly activities/chores?

i'll start!

i don't exercise by itself; never have enjoyed it. i used to enjoy riding my bicycle as a kid, but haven't owned one since then. well, i bought a bike when i lived in LA, but that was stolen (the bike lock frozen, then broken) just a few days after i brought it home.
i love to swim, and enjoy swimming in both fresh water (creeks/lakes) and pools, but haven't been swimming in probably close to 20 years.

these days i get my exercise by doing my chores, and in large part by moving, stacking, and trimming down (to usable size) firewood. i also get good exercise from unloading everything after my shopping, especially the cat litter -- yesterday there were seven 35lb pails of cat litter!

How about you?

I'm a walker. I shoot for at least 3 to 3.5 miles a day; most days during the week I get 6 miles in. I should do some weights or use the Bowflex in the basement in addition to my walking, but I never seem to get around to it.

During the summer, we have a large vegetable garden that we weed; there's exercise there. And I will often push-mow our yard instead of using the riding tractor all the time. Our property is almost 1-1/2 acres, so that's exercise, too.

I was up until Lucky died, just haven't had the "oomph" to get back into it - or other things for that matter. I still pay for it. It's not a regular gym, but actually a group workout thing with trainers. One of the trainers is one I used to train with when Bally's still existed (and before he took off to live in New Zealand and Australia for a few years).

I'll get back into it again at some point. I really need to, lol.

The last time I worked out was the week before we lost Kitten. Before that I was a 6-7 day hour and a half spinner and worked with weights 3-4 days per week. I'm so shut down I can't get myself on the ex bike. I have been messing with the weights the last week. I hope that's a good sign.

I started having the urge on the day after having to walk down 7 flights of stairs at work (so... Tuesday?) because the fire alarm was going off. I felt the "burn" in my quads, which is pretty dang sad really. So yeah, that's the first time I had the urge to go back.

When I do go back, it's gonna hurt so bad, lol. They don't take it easy on you there, that's for sure. Just wish they were closer (that doesn't help either with the oomph part).

Yeah I'm getting the urge and also well aware of the pain to come. The only gym we have near is run by someone who is really religious as evidenced by the décor . Of course it does help with the wanting to run. away.

I keep meaning to start exercising, but I never actually do. I'm pretty lazy. :lol3:
I work in retail though, so I spend a lot of time walking around - when I had a pedometer, I was averaging around 15,000 steps per day (on work days). Occasionally I'll get an extra workout stocking kitty litter or giant bags of dig food.

Far more sedentary than I would like to be.  I'd love to go walk daily, but the big walker with the seat ( long distances) it just too heavy to get up and down the stairway on a daily basis.  I mostly only use it to get to the dumpster and laundry room, because I can carry bags and baskets on the seat as I walk.  If I ever get downstairs, I'll be walking quite frequently.

I try to exercise, but health issues don't always make it easy. I do yoga on and off (and have done for 10 years or more), and I ride or work with my exmoor mare when I can...and stable chores make for quite good exercise too. I used to walk (with the dogs) a lot as well, but only manage it occasionally now :sigh:

I used to be a LOT more active when I was younger, and I really miss those days. My body just won't cooperate so well anymore.

I'm a slug. Not good but true. I hate sweating. And I'm lazy also.

My "exercise" comes from walking and stair climbing during my weekly commute and walking around grocery stores on weekends.  I didn't enjoy being physically active as a kid either although I was much more active; riding bikes, skating, and just running around.  But, I  don't derive a sense of competition or accomplishment by being physically active.  The few things I used to enjoy when younger have become impossible due to 3 knee surgeries combined with arthritis in various places.

I probably would like something like Pilates - but no classes anywhere near me.  The only one I saw was scheduled in the middle of the afternoon weekdays  - not convenient for those of us  who have full time jobs out of the home.

I used to be a gym rat. I used to go every other day to the gym during or after work.. up until I had thyroid cancer. The stress and recouping days.. I never got the motivation back. been 3 years since.. and I really SHOULD go back to lose the weight I've gained. ugh

Seems the common reason for losing motivation is a major life event. It's supposed to be nice this week. Hopefully I can get back on track just doing some yard work.

I was going to the gym 3 times a week until Mia got really sick in December. I've been meaning to start again but I've just been spending lots of time with the kitties. This past week I've had a really bad cold. Hopefully next week I can start again.

I've never gone to a gym.  I did have a treadmill years ago but found it so boring and eventually sold it.

These days my exercise is shoveling snow in winter and gardening / mowing the lawn in summer.  Once the weather gets warmer, I want to try to get into the habit of walking every morning.   I'd also like to try yoga.

I put my eq in front of a TV. I have to keep my mind busy.

On top of just being sad and depressed I have the winter funk.

walking 6 miles is really great!

ahhh, yes! i usually mow my lawn with my push mower too, though my lawn is a bit less than 1/4 acre. i have a lawn tractor (actually two -- an old 2002 scott's, and the brand new deere), but don't mow with it unless it's too hot to be using the push mower -- i've had a mild-ish case of heat exhaustion before, and have no desire to go through that experience again.

i think i can identify with that. as my little snick's
CKD progressed, she preferred for me to stay close to her...which i believe comforted her, and many of my not-absolutely-necessary things got delayed or changed (like my flower garden beds, which i left a very good selection of perennials but just mowed over the rest -- i didn't have the time to properly weed them). i'm just now finishing going through the clutter that had accumulated on my kitchen counters -- items i use often, so it was just easier to leave them on the counter; receipts and other papers, that needed going through and then filing them. it's helped me to start slow and then just work on things bit by bit, gradually getting things done. once i started, it was pretty easy to continue.

i really like the concept of a group workout type thing with trainers!

I think, in part, it also has to do with the fact that I have another sick kitty to take care of. Although she's very early stage CKD, I worry a lot. I guess because of what happened to Lucky, and how soon this happened after he died. I am trying to get back into going out again occasionally, but definitely don't like getting home late anymore. I will make a few exceptions for it - but very few. As far as things at home, the main thing I've been doing is turning my bedroom into a cat room :lol3: I feel so pathetic sometimes.

Yeah, the group workout with trainers is pretty cool. I wasn't sure if I'd like it considering we used to do one-on-one, but I liked it a lot better than I thought. I just need to get the oomph to go again, and getting home at 7:30 on a weeknight feels so late now.

oh, yes! definitely!
i totally 'get' that -- our jaspurr hasn't been feeling well lately, and i worry about him much more...deeply(?), since our little snick crossed the bridge really not very long ago.

i turned my bedroom into a cat room! i mean, i moved my bed downstairs to one side of the living room (closer to the wood stove, was where my snick was 95% of the time, is near the girl's 'kitty apartment' so they have me near them during the night, and no stairs to negotiate for middle of the night trips to the bathroom). my bedroom was our jaspurr's safe room, and he still prefers to eat his meals there as well as having his litter boxes up there. jaspurr does spend time up there every day -- there are several cat trees, cat beds, loungers, and cat toys up there too. and the girls spend time upstairs too!
