Hi everyone!

I'm new to posting but have been reading for awhile. I have a crazy question for everyone because I'm not sure how I feel.

I do like the vet I take my cat to however every time I go in there the staff seems to have favorite patients and they are usually dogs. They make over certain ones like oh we are so happy to see you today, we love you.

Maybe it's jealousy? Or maybe I feel they spend more time with their favorites? Maybe I'm just weird?

Would that make a difference to anyone else but me?

Also wanted to say I have learned a lot from everyone here. Thank you.

Cats are normally travelling by crate, I wouldn't put to much into it
Vet staff fawn over all pets depending on how much time they have, every pet is their fave.

Welcome TCS
Any pictures of your fur baby to share?  Everyone loves pictures here.  Agree this is a wonderful site, the best.

Also, dogs tend to like it when people give them a lot of attention like that, whereas the vet techs probably know that fawning over a cat will not make it happier to be there!

I would't worry about it. As they get to know you, they will be glad to see you, too. Dogs have the upper edge sometimes if they are also being groomed at the vets' as everyone sees them more often and gets to know them.

Nice to have you on The Cat Site PrettyKitty53.

My cats are almost all semi-feral, so when ever I take one to the vet I can see the receptionist's face drop. They always ask. "Is the cat netted?" as they know an un-netted feral cat is going to take off as soon as I open the carrier.

Like @Molly92  said, dogs respond to strangers a lot better than most cats do so that's probably why they make such a fuss of the dogs.

I'd love to see some pictures of your cats too.

As the others said, dogs are usually not crated and there is easier access for them to fawn over them. Cats who are frightened (all cats at the vets) could be very uncomfortable with the attention. Don't take it personally unless the staff is openly rude to you.

My vet receptionist will coo and talk to my kitties if they are in the carrier and I set it on the counter.  Since they've gotten bigger I use the stroller to bring them in.  They still get a smile and the vets remember me and my cats.  The consequences of bringing them in too often - for silly things.  Can you get the wasp stinger out of my kittens paws? (by the time I found a vet he had gotten it out)  Does my cat have fleas (turns out it was a reaction to Revolution)?

Welcome to TCS!

I agree with what's been posted thus far.

However, I got our Mollipop from the vet hospital when she was about seven weeks old, so they know her. And when she goes in for her check-up, she always comes out of the carrier and we do the rounds of all the receptionists, vet techs, and doctors. Everybody knows Mollipop and they always ooh and aah over her. Even when we're in the exam room with one vet, another vet will come in, just to say hi to Miss Pop. I think they all like to check on her since she was born there.

I agree that dogs have an upper hand because they are not in a carrier.  I think the vets reaction to cats has to depend on the cat's personality and how often they have seen your cat.  Starbuck my oldest cat when she was a kitten was a love bug and loved everyone.  At the vet's office I used back then the staff would always come in the room to visit with her and give her lovings.  I go to a different vet's now and much less often. Starbuck is much older now and does not like strangers so it would terrify her.  Starbuck has one vet that I use with her right now and she seems comfortable with her.  This vet sprays herself with Feliway between patients and uses wipes on her hands.  It really seemed to help Starbuck feel more comfortable. She gave us a Feliway wipe to use on the carrier for a future vet visit and my hubby said it really helped made Starbuck much calmer in the car.  I think we will be getting more wipes before she goes to the vet for anything else.

Casey my youngest is a people cat but he has only been to the vet a couple times.  I have also changed vets since he was a kitten.  The last time he was at the vet he nuzzled the vet and the techs when they had to pick him up.  He is still loves people and is not scared of strangers or loud noises.  I think he would be comfortable with people wanting to see him and pet him.

Sonny and Apollo are still people cats but take a little while to warm up to strangers so I do not think they would do well with a bunch of people at the vets wanting to love on them.

My kitties have always gotten fawned over. I think my vet and the patient coordinator are partial to kitties :) But everyone, including the reception staff, always love to see my little ones. I find this very cool considering I've only been going there a little over a year. Will have to see how the reaction is when I bring in my two pooches!

My vet and her staff fawns over my babies. They always tell me what good kitties they are. If they didn't fuss over them I would probaly not go there. I would find a cat only vet. In our area their is only one cat only vet and they do not have the technology I feel my cats need.

I agree dogs have the upper hand BUT I believe the front office staff should greet everyone the same. At least they could say it's good to see Mina today, I don't expect them to pet her being in a carrier. I guess I want to know EVERYONE there loves cats and she will get full attention from everyone not just a few.
Thank you everyone.

I agree! My vets have certain hours reserved for cat only appointments so they are more comfortable in the waiting area. If I schedule during those hours I take them with a harness and leash, if not they are in carrier and they come out with harness and leash once they are in the exam room.

I can understand that.  You don't want your cat to get over looked and have something missed because they prefer dogs.  I got lucky with my vet.  It seems they are not all good with cats.

Welcome to TCS. You'll be very happy here. A nicer bunch of people you'll not find anywhere else.
I think most people are dog orientated. After all they get silly when petted and stroked whereas our cats are more standoffish. They don't want evert Tom dick or Harry touching them. Let's face it, cats are superior.
Seriously as stated before, the cats are caged so there's no hands on. You have to be the one they're happy to see. I've been going to my vet for over 20 years so I'm pretty well known.but the cats don't get special treatment like the dogs until they come out of the cage.
Don't let it worry you.

I've been to the same vet clinic three times in the past 3 months, every time has been sort of different. The receptionist talks to Pumpkin if she's on the counter but no one made a fuss 'til she was in the examination room. Last time we went it was funny, four staff members were telling her how pretty she was and patting her through the carrier.
Comes down to if they have time, staff, and the thought cats might be more stressed out by excessive attention, in my opinion.
