Hello. My name is Emma and I live with my aunt and uncle. 3 years ago we saw an orange fuzzball in the guide. We went to go see him at the shelter and ended up taking him home. His name is Monkey. Now it's 3 years later and things have not turned out like we had expected. I love my cat very dearly. He's the first animal I've had such a deep bond with. So. Here is the issue: When we got Monkey, he wasnt that fat. But now, he's just gotten so big. It worries me because I don't want him to get diabetes and its very hard on his legs. He's already torn a muscle from falling because he is really uncoordinated. He slips on news papers for gods sake. This isn't even the bad part. Two years ago a relative brought her chihuahua over when she stayed the weekend. No big deal. Its happened before. But we had no idea she was covered in fleas. My cat is like a magnet to those things. If there is a flea, it will end up on him. We spent almost 2 hears fighting to get these fleas off him. About 3 months into his battle with fleas, it turned into worms. We have given him medicine from the vet so many times to get rid of these worms but it's not working. Around the same time he contracted the worms, we noticed his poo started selling really bad. And I don't mean just a little ew. I mean, we had to spray air freshener, open windows, turn on the fan. It was bad enough that our eyes would water. It was such an awful smell. Even Monkeh would run away after pooping cause even he didn't want to smell it. Now, with those stank poops he was having (and still is having), we noticed that it was super soft. In the last 3 months or so, he has gotten in the habit of wiping his butt on the carpet. And yes, he leaves quite a lot behind when he wipes his butt. He almost refuses to clean his own butt and I don't blame him for not wanting to because that's just gross. But in the past week he has literally been wiping his butt on the carpet every time he poops. My aunt and uncle are about at their end with him. They also love him very dearly but it's so irritating waking up and finding streaks all over the carpets. This morning, we woke up to a THREE FOOT LONG STREAK OF POO. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP. We need advice. We need help. We don't know what to do and we have taken him to the vet so many times that it's beginning to become hard to pay for them. Taking him to the vet when he ripped his leg muscle was a lot of money. We were gonna end up taking him for his bowel issue but then his leg happened and it got stalled because its just too much money. I fully understand that when you buy an animal, you do need to have money to tend to their needs such as vet appointments, food, and other items. But this is not what we expected. His previous owner was elderly and they died so we don't know much about what he did when he was younger. The last thing I need help with is his crying. For the past week he has been crying at my bedroom door for me to come out. I am allergic to cats, among many other things, and I cannot let him in my room. I can be with him out in the rest of the house but I would be having severe allergy attacks if I were to let him in my room. Yes, I am on allergy medication. I am on two different ones that just barely keep my allergies at bay. No, I am not on allergy shots but I have gotten them before and had very bad reactions to them. Trust me, if I could let Monkey in my room, I would 1000 times over but I just cannot for the sake of my health. Now, him crying at my door wouldn't be so bad if it weren't at 2am, 5am, or 6am. I have 10:30am college classes and, while that might not sound bad, I need all the sleep I can get. My psychiatric medication, which I cannot go off of right now, makes me tired easily. So adequit sleep is what helps the most. My aunt and uncle are usually home with him all day or at least one of them usually is. Its maybe once or twice a week he's left alone in the house, and for maybe an hour to three hours at the most. And he seems to enjoy his alone time. Before he was afraid we weren't coming back but when he figured out that we were, he was just fine with us leaving. Now, despite that he craves to be around people and is an extremely loving cat. Sometimes shy towards strangers (and for some reason is terrified of darker skinned people?) but once he warms up to you he will be all over you. He seems to prefer women but he will go to men as well. Anyway, I sincerely apologize for the length of this post but I wanted to give all information possible so someone could help. I hope I'm posting this in the right place. This is my first post on a site like this.

What are you feeding him?
Very smelly poo is often caused by a very poor diet. Seeing as he's obese he needs to be on a special diet to help him lose weight. I'd contact your vet to rule out any other issues that may cause loose stool and I would highly suggest getting him on a lean, high quality food.

He also may need to be treated for worms again.  Cats can get worms by ingesting fleas, so if there are any more fleas, there can always be more worms.  How have you treated for the fleas?

I do think he needs to see a vet for the bowel issues.  He may need his anal glands expressed, which could be the cause of the scooting.  He also needs a parasite panel run.  He could have worms, but it could also be something like giardia.

I would also like to know how much and how often you feed him.  He should not be obese with the right diet, and the above poster is right that low-quality food with fillers can lead to stinky poop.

Do you play with him? He needs exercise.

When we got him he was eating meow mix, the wet and dry food. His poo smelled so bad we figured it must be the food, so we switched him to science diet. He wouldn't eat that. Then we tried blue basics and many other high quality cat foods. Right now he's on a cat food called beyond. Its supposed to be high quality yet its just making him runny when he goes poo.

talkingpeanut talkingpeanut We have been treating him for worms this entire time. The stuff we give him is liquid and we get it from the vet. The vet gives it to him. We treat him for fleas every month. We are pretty sure he doesn't have them anymore cause we've checked him but about the same time each month he gets itchy so we put the medicine on and he's fine. But I don't think it's this anal glands that are the issue because he only scoots on the carpet when he has loose stools which also end up as streaks on the carpet. He is fed once in the morning with a fourth of a can of wet food and like a handful of dry food. Then at night, like dinner time, he gets another fourth of a can of wet food. We literally cannot feed him more wet food cause it makes him sick. We used to fill his dish up with the dry food but he was, and still is, getting bigger. And yes I play with him quite frequently. He likes to play with fuzzy pipe cleaners, feathers, shadows, and later pointers.

My concern would still be that if there is even one flea he ingests there could be more worms. It's a cycle, and I'm not sure you've truly stopped it.

He could also still have issues with his anal glands, which could be part of what you're seeing on the carpet.

It also doesn't sound like he's eating enough, though still overweight. I would want his thyroid checked. I would also see if he has an allergy to a protein source.

I do think another full work up at the vet is in order.

The bottom line is that if you want these things to stop--the foul smelling feces, the scooting, etc.--you're going to have to take him to the vet.  Generally speaking, worms don't cause cats to scoot.  Nonetheless, the worms may cause loose stools which can irritate the cat's anus which can then lead to scooting . . . or it may simply be that his anal glands are impacted. Cats who have loose stools often have this problem and have to be manually expressed by the vet or their owner.

Finally, you should not have to treat a cat continually (as in every day) for worms.  Something is going on there.  Either you're dosing him incorrectly or the medication provided by the vet is not efficacious against whatever particular parasite he might have.

As I said in the beginning, if you want these things to stop you're going to have to take him to the vet. Unfortunately, as incredibly bright as so many of our members are, they are not able to diagnose and cure your cat over the web.  At the very least he needs his stool examined.  At most he needs blood-work to determine his consumption vs his weight gain issue.

Good luck and please keep us up to date.

My cat had loose stools from the day she was picked up by the humane society (in November) until two days ago. She was on an antibiotic from the vet for eight days, which ended, then there was a day, and now she had normal stools. She scooted her butt on the carpet once, leaving a poo smear. If you think about it, kitty does NOT want to lick that up to clean, so if there's soft poo left behind, there you go. My Luna also had very stinky poo. Definitely take him to the vet. If the diarrhea gets fixed, the butt scooting should too. The anal glands don't empty themselves properly with loose stool, so that's really what needs to be fixed.
It's not fun to have a cat with tummy troubles. You just have to isolate the cause- or rather the vets do- and treat for it. It took me visits to two different vets but now Luna is happier and healthier and my room doesn't smell.
