I have two kittens... one of them consistently gets kitty litter between his toes on his rear paws... the other does not.

I am removing the kitty litter by soaking his paws in warm water, but this is extremely uncomfortable for him.

Any suggestions?

Yes, I'd definitely change litters. There have also been some rumors about the lightweight litter creating breathing problems for cats, so better safe than sorry.

You can use a non-clumping litter made of pellets or paper. Or, you can try a plant-based clumping litter that still will get stuck in their paws, but it won't swell up and cause potential blockages if they lick it off. Another option is a silica crystal litter. When I fostered a kitten with long hair that was always getting litter stuck to himself, I used Precious Cat Long Hair litter and I really liked it. You remove solid waste, but urine is absorbed by the crystals and you just have to stir it around. You empty out the litter and replace it every 2 weeks-a month, depending on how many cats are using it. The crystals are too big to get stuck in paws or fur. I don't use it anymore because my cat's a little picky and I don't think the texture is as comfortable as clumping litters, but if your cats don't mind it (this kitten didn't) it might be a good option.
