It has been seven days since I saw on my FB page, Our local Humane Society was closing and a scared kitties photo showed he had been there since early July. Well my 2 female kitties and I didn't have any foster pets at the moment. I have patience, a 4 bedroom house that the carpet was being torn out for remodel in spring and no other humans. Sonic is his name. So I and my canvas cat carrier with 3 sides with netting went to pick up our new Family member knowing I had patience and time on my side. He wasn't a ferrel they told me. He loves to be scratched behind his ears and melts on your lap once your able to get him out of the cage. I found this wonderful site to help with ideas on how to get him socialized. He had been in isolation for a good part of his stay with ring worm and ear mites. Well he is terrified I put him in my small bathroom to isolate him from the other kitties until he went to get his wellness check up

What an angel you are for rescuing Sonic! Working in rescue myself, this absolutely makes my heart happy!

When is his vet appointment scheduled for? Ear mites are likely to clear up after two treatments...the ringworm (depending on how severe) may take a little longer. And, the bathroom is an excellent place for him as it'll be easy to sanitize.

Is he healthy otherwise? I assume you will discuss when to neuter him at your appointment. I suspect they'll want to wait until the medical issues are cleared up.

If you haven't done so, a Feliway diffuser in the bathroom can help relax him. There is also Composure treats, Composure Liquid Max and Rescue Remedy. My favorite is Feliway, but many here have had success with Composure Liquid Max (available on Amazon.)

Oh poor baby! And bless you for adopting this sweet little creature. Always have to wonder what happened in their lives when told they're not feral.

Thank you for taking him in! I'm sure you know that this will require a lot of patience while he learns to trust and love you. Do you plan to have him fixed? I assume your girls are? That will help everyone to settle too.

I have been with him every few hour petting him in his carrier he is eating well when I put the food up to his mouth wether it is wet or dry. I called the vet we decided we would to it all at once . He got altered and shots and medication for ear infection on Tuesday. The carrier is great I can carry him to parts of the house in it and he can see what is going on an sit by the fire. I even have it open and he wouldn't come out. But last night we had a break through he actually slithered out of his house to visit the kitties meowing like a tom. My kitties found a new hiding place in the closet and we let him have the house for the night. I am really concerned about his walking and what if any long term problems he may have not walking for so long.

Thank for all the input. His ringworm and ear mites were all taken care of while he was at the shelter. So he was isolated while there. They said he lost most of his hair it has grown back but his back is very scaled. Still kept him isolated here until he checked by the vet. This morning I held him on my lap for awhile he was finally purring but wants so much to interact with my females. They came about five feet from him as he is doing his Tom Cat meow. I am not sure how to go about socializing them. He doesn't struggle to get out of my arms when he is meowing to them, but I am concerned for the females safety. He is 12 lbs my small one is 6 lbs I have fostered "normal" kitties and they have been okay with them but they know this one is different maybe because he was a Tom

The Tom Cat drive will probably go away, and in most cases males have to respect the wishes of the females, and they are unlikely to attack them.  They just sing love songs.  A female in heat responds by singing back, chirping, and raising her pretty little butt in the air, and he will then sidle up to her and grab her by the back of the neck and climb on.  She does not object.  Since your girls are spayed, they are unlikely to invite him to breed them, so nothing will happen that they don't want, and he won't hurt them in any way.  Experienced toms are great with females in my experience.

I had one who was maybe 4 years old when neutered, and he would still respond to any female in heat.  Since I did rescue at the time, he was useful, since so many nursing moms go back into heat while still nursing, before they are able to have surgery (they need to be done nursing for 2 weeks before being spayed to avoid injuring the mammary tissue).  Since cats will stay in heat for a long time if not bred, and breeding causes them to ovulate and then go out of heat, he was a great boon to the rescue effort.  Unfortunately he is at the Rainbow Bridge now, but the last of the females has been spayed and there is peace in the house at the moment.

Update on Sonic. Well l I found out we have a wild male cat in the neighborhood and came in through the cat door and attacked poor Sonic just has he was starting to socialize with my 2 fixed females. Closed cat door and that cat was not giving up came through my back door and poor Sonic disappeared for five days hiding in the garage, kept water and food out for him and he showed up at cat door one morning crying so I opened the door. He came running in. His bed and food are now right at the open cat door and he has claimed his domain. Once or twice a day I hear a screech it is Sonic pouncing on that Tom trying to get in the door. He walks up to me for a pet now but doesn't want to be held he will come around. We are settling in. His bed is right at my bedroom door. My 2 females sleep on my bed he can see them but won't come in. He is really coming around.Still runs when I walk past him but then follows me. He fears being picked up and taken away if he sees me with a jacket or towel he hides.
