Hi! I have a foster that was being treated for diarrhea with Panacur and Metronidazole. He was having upper respiratory problems that really became obvious a week ago. So he was prescribed Doxycycline also. He is finished with the Panacur and Metronidazole, but is still on the Doxycycline until Saturday. He went from picking at his food to almost not eating at all tonight. I had to really encourage him.

I'm taking him back tomorrow to the shelter for another checkup due to lack of appetite. I was wondering if anyone's cat has had appetite problems after using these drugs. How long did it take for them to regain their desire for food? How long do the affects of these drugs typically last? I'm wondering what to expect later as he may be kept overnight and returned to me after he's well enough for fostering again. Poor little thing was so stressed and sick when I picked him up last week

Thanks for any shared experience!

Aw, poor little guy! I can't remember how the appetites of the cats I've given metronidazole to were affected...probably not that much because I didn't even realize that was a side effect until I looked it up. Every cat is different, though. His URI might be contributing to the loss of appetite as well. If you can get some baby food (chicken or turkey, the kind in the little jars), he might be more willing to eat that than cat food right now. It's very mild, easy to eat, and it smells pretty enticing.

Poor guy!  Most likely it's either an upset tummy from meds that's causing the decreased appetite or he can't smell his food.  I always entice my cats to eat by sprinkling parmesan cheese on top of their food or putting some bonito flakes on it.  Also, warming canned food up in the microwave or in a water bath for a little while will help enhance the aroma and entice them to eat.

Awe. My baby had to be given an appetite stimulant after taking it to start eatting again. He started eatting a few treats first. I only had to give him one dose. The kind he was given could only be given every three days. The science diet food he was given did not help. He looked at me like what is this stuff you are putting on my plate!!

My kitty Tiger was on Metronidazole for diarrhea during an acute pancreatitis attack-she only needed 3  days worth, and no side effects  luckily.  It is best given with food, and the same with the Doxycycline.  Have  you tried  Ham flavored baby food sprinkled with Fortaflora?  ...Also you might ask your vet if a better probiotic to restore good gut bacteria would help.  It can take a week after a course of antibiotics to feel better if you are having harsh side effects and Metronidazole can definitely have some harsh side effects other than GI upsets.

So, I've tried warming wet food in the microwave, chicken flavor baby food, a little cheese and nothing got this cat to eat on his own. Last Wednesday he was running a fever and still had a fever when I took him in yesterday for another checkup. The vet at the shelter decided to go ahead and keep him under close observation while investigating for underlying problems. I haven't heard any updates yet as to when he's ok to be fostered out again.

Thanks everybody for your advice! My foster was just really sick. The sickest I've had so far:(

How long has the cat gone without eating? More than 24 hrs? I had to syringe feed the foster with baby food, but that can't go on for too long. There's something else wrong when they don't eat on their own and it's very dangerous for cats to go too long with no food. They just get sicker when there's a lack of appetite. You may need to take the cat to another vet if it means to save its life. I had this similar problem with the Metronidazole. Cat was doing ok, then he got sicker after taking this medication. So I took em in to see a vet and he's under hospitalization.

Hope your kitten improves!

He is eating but they said the medicine was supposed to help with diarrhea but it's gotten worse his anus is swollen aND leaks it's bad and causing concern because everyone has said he's fine he will get over it even though he isn't he's coughing and sneezing now on top of diarrhea but he will eat and drink on his own so that's the plus side to it. I have a vet asking to see him, should I make the vet aware the first medicine didn't work just made it worse?

It could really help the vet to better treat your cat if you give them the full story. What's been the symptoms, for how long have these symptoms been going on, what meds he was on and currently taking. Also what food he eats. A good vet should ask these questions anyway. Help the vet help the pet by giving any and all details :)

Glad to hear the litte one is atleast eating.
