So with there being a new kitten in the house, one of our other cats is either ill or depressed. He hasn't been eating as muchas he used to before the kitten came along. He has been secluding himself so he can sleep but he won't come out when ever I bring in cat food for them in the mornin (today was no exception). Could the weird weather change make him sick? He still keeps his fur clean but he sleeps more and eats less and his purr sounds...different. It sounds like its a bit hoarse. I just got over a sickness where I couldn't hardly breath and had no voice. Could I have caused it? (I don't have money to take him to a vet)

There are three issues here, I think.  One is that your cat needs to go to the vet but you don't have the means to take him and two, he needs encouragement to eat.  Three, he might be stressed out by the arrival of the new kitten.

Below is some information that might help you get your boy to the vet.

In addition to this, some vets will payment plans or post dated payments.  It does not hurt to ask.

Encouraging your cat to eat:

If cats don't eat for even two or three days, or do not eat enough, they develop hepatic liver disease, or fatty liver.  This can be fatal so it's vitally important to get your cat to eat.  http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/digestive/c_ct_hepatic_lipidosis

Below is some more information and some ideas:

Tempt your cat with warmed up food, such as tuna fish and turkey or chicken baby food (without garlic and onions).  Warming up the food will release the aroma and may tempt your kitty to eat.

Put some tasty toppers on your cat's food, such as bonita flakes, crumbled cheese or fortiflora.  Check out amazon and on-line pet stores for an idea of other toppings available.

If your cat is still drinking, give him some goat's milk

If he continues to refuse to eat, you may be forced to feed him with a syringe.  Needless syringes are available from pharmacies for low to no cost.    You can also rub some honey or karo syrup on his gums to get a bit of nourishment into him, but if it reaches this point, he must go to the vet.

Dealing with the stress of the new kitten.

Did you go through the introduction process?  If so, you might need to back up a bit and take it more slowly.  Below is some info on introducing cats to each other.

There are calming agents that help anxious cats relax.

1.  Feliway is a pheromone based product available as a diffuser or spray. http://www.feliway.com/us/#redirected  Amazon is said to have the cheapest prices.

2.  Composure is a calming agent available as treats and as a liquid.

3.  Bach's floral remedies, including Rescue Remedy have helped many of our members.  http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pets-bach-flower/  http://cats.about.com/od/behaviortraining/a/uses_for_bach_flower_essences.htm

4.  Spirits Essence, like Bach products is a homeopathic product:  http://www.spiritessences.com/

5.  Some people have luck making teas out of chamomile or hops.

The above are only some of the calming agents available - if you look at websites for amazon and for pet supplies, you'll find more options.

I know this is a lot of information.  I would start off by trying to get your kitty to the vet.

Good luck.  I hope your kitty feels better soon!
