My 8 year old girl Mittens has to have a dental later in February and needs to have 2 teeth pulled.  Needless to say, I am worried.  I know she will have pain and although she will bet pain meds, I am still worried about the procedure and the aftermath.  Also, she is a petite girl - just 8 lbs - so I dont want her to lose weight.

Could others here share your experience with having your cats' teeth pulled?

Oh, poor Mittens. Why does she need to have her teeth pulled?

I have two almost toothless cats. Gin kun, in my avatar, is a former feral. He was at least ten years old when we first met and he'd had a rough life. He's had one tooth removed due to an ulcer and another three removed due to decay/gum disease. He also has a broken fang, but the vet left that as it wasn't causing him any trouble.

I also have another rescued feral, Happy. She must be almost a year old now. She had a very bad gum infection when I first found her and had all except her two top fangs removed at the same time as being spayed.

Gin and Happy are both FIV+. Gum disease seems to be quite common with FIV cats.

They've both managed really well without their teeth. They eat wet and dry food, Gin regularly catches mice out in our cat enclosure. They've both put on weight since having their teeth removed. I think painful gums stopped them eating as much as they needed before. They seem much more comfortable now.

Hi, Norachan:  thank you for your response.  She has signiicant decay, the vet showed me.  a black area near the gumline.   So I cant ignore it.  And she does favor the other side of her mouth when she eats.

I certainly sympathize with your concern. Anytime our furbabies need to be anesthetized for a procedure it's a little nerve wracking!

I' expectations been through this procedure multiple times and the cats have done VERY well. We always do canned food only for the week or two after and haven't had any complications.

I think it's much like for us when we have a bad tooth...once it's out, we feel much better and our overall demeanor is improved.

My last cat had multiple dentals and a fair amount of teeth pulled with no issues. :) I do understand your concern though. My cat is going in tomorrow morning for a dental and may have extractions and I'm a little nervous.
