I have already gotten some great advice on the behavior forum.  My name is Jessa.  My hubby & I  just got my MIL's cat, named Angel.  My MIL's recently passed so the poor kitty is stressed, but getting better. ;-)

She is very tiny, about 6-7 pounds.  Looks like a miniature Maine Coon.  LOL

This is my first cat in 20 years.  I had a love bug named Sam.  I hope Angel learns to love our home and us.  We just want her to be happy, or at least content.

She seems to like when I sing Angel, Baby to the tune of Santa, Baby.  Which is very surprising because I am tone deaf.  LOL

I hope I fit into your community.

Jessa

Welcome to TCS! I love that you sing to Angel and she likes it! And, thank you for taking in this sweet furbaby. Many in her situation would end up at a shelter, so she is VERY lucky to have you!

Hello and welcome!!

That was very kind of you to take in your MIL's cat. Many family members wouldn't do that.

I'm sure that Angel will learn to love you and your home. Cats are very intelligent, intuitive animals. They know when they are in an environment where they are loved and wanted. Just give her lots of love and play with her. Most cats cannot resist wand toys such as Da Bird and laser pointers. She knows that your intentions towards her are good. It will take time, patience and lots of love but I'm sure that in time, it will feel like she has always been with you.

Cats are not like dogs as they do not give their love and trust indiscriminately. It must be earned but as we all know, it is worth every second. Use the slow blink trick with her. All cats know this instinctively. Look right to the side or right above her head and close your eyes, hold them shut for a few seconds than open them. This is one way that cats greet each other. It's their way of saying, "Hi! I see you and I'm not a threat to you." In time, you will see that she will do this back or she will do this without your instigating it.

I also like the fact that you sing to her. It will get her used to your voice. Use positive reinforcement by giving her treats and playtime when she behaves in a way that you want. My cats go crazy for Pure Bites freeze dried chicken breast treats. Both these and Da Bird can be found at online retailers such as Amazon. Petco and Petsmart charge WAY too much for the Pure Bites.

You're a cat person. You'll fit right in!

Please feel free to post lots of pictures of her. There's no such thing as too many here. We're here if you need any help.

It was one of the last wishes of my MIL.  My step daughter & Angel did not get along, nor did my SD's cat Coco and Angel get along.  My SD lived with my MIL.  She is almost 21.  I will check out those Pure Bites.  I am already planning on spoiling her silly, or as much as she will allow.  :-)

I figured that she was a tortie. they are fantastic. It also clears up a little regarding her not getting along with Coco. Torties are famous for having "tortitude". They are spunky little things and many of them prefer to rule the roost alone without any other cats around. Some do OK in multi cat households, others do not. Welcome to tortie servitude. Not only do I not think that she will not have an issue with you spoiling her, I think that she will soon expect it. I adore torties. They have great (strong) personalities and are all so uniquely beautiful.

Some more on tortitude

Thanks you so much!  I am having some picture issues.  LOL  She is almost 5.  I believe my MIL got her in the spring.  I agree about the Maine Coon thing.  My family had a stray Maine Coon who was huge!  I was just going by what my MIL said years ago.  I am thinking tortie. :-)  Your cat is adorable!
