Hello.  I work with a local TNR program and we caught a cat a month ago today and I decided to keep her because she had been beaten up pretty bad, one of her eyes is showing the 3rd eyelid and you cannot see her eye, her tail was ripped off, etc.  I finally got her comfortable enough that I could take her to the vet this last weekend and they said her eye needs to be removed because she has a congenial eye defect.  The vet said the one eye was smaller than the other, it had a slight infection and her eye would keep getting infected because she cannot clean it like her other eye.  She did not show a light in the eye to see if it functions or not.  I guess i am really unsure what to do.  I've never dealt with this before (I have 12 other cats) and I know nothing about eye enucleations.  I don't want to do this to her unless it is absolutely necessary.  Does anyone have any advice on this?  Do I get a second opinion?  Will she be okay if I say go ahead and do the procedure?

She will be so much happier and feel better if the eye is taken care of .  Her other eye will compensate for the loss of this one.  The hardest part is seeing the incision site after the surgery.  She'll probably handle the whole thing better than you.  Kitties are resilient like that.

Thank you for your response!  I have been worried sick that I am going to make the wrong mistake with this.  She's been through so much, I just want to give her a happy, healthy life.  Thank you again.

Probably the healthiest thing you can do for her is to get that eye removed.  There will be no more pain or infection for her and that will contribute to her overall health and she'll feel better.
