I recently noticed that my 8 month old female has what looks like either a cut or a rug burn on the back of her neck.

I noticed it about 3 or 4 days ago and i have been cleaning it and keeping an eye on it, but I can't quite figure out how she got it, it is a full circle and the fur around it is gone. I doesn't seem to hurt or bother her, but every time she scratches that back of her neck, she rips at it and makes it worse, I have tried wrapping a tenser bandage around it so she can't claw at it, but it doesn't seem to be helping very well.

Does anyone have any idea how she could have gotten it or if it is something else?

I think you should get her to the vet and have her tested for ringworm.

I've talked to a vet and they have seen pictures and they said it's not ringworm, they said it's probably just a scratch but it doesn't look like a scratch

I would get a second opinion and have them test to make sure it's not ringworm or some other kind of fungal skin infection.  Do you have fleas in your area?  Could be a flea bite, too.

has your little girl had any flea treatment put on/applied to the back of her neck? i think it's not necessarily likely the cause, but worth asking. some cats do have a reaction to particular flea treatments.

definitely a good idea to have your vet check this too!

I agree that the vet should take a look at that in person.  I  do not think that looks like a scratch either.  It is great you are keeping it clean but it may require some sort of topical medication to heal and prevent infection.  I would not put anything on it though until your vet looks at and let's you know what to do.

Will it be something I can pick up at a pet store? Money is a bit tight atm to go and bring her to my vet.

Not knowing what it is really makes it possible to buy OTC. If it is ringworm wash your hands after touching your kitty. It's something that can be passed on to you.

I am another person saying to take her to the Vet and ask for them to culture the spot.  I am dealing with ringworm atm.  When I adopted my cat he was about 8 months old.  No lesions but has some scabs that the doctor said was just flea dermatitis.  2 months later he began to rub his eye and it just looked pink and some hair loss.  Again, the same Vet said he thought it was just a reaction to the ear drops I was using for a yeast infection.
Two weeks after that Graysan began scratching like mad at his eye brow until it turned pink with more hair loss and then I noticed a spot under my other cat Yong Gi's arm.  I sent pictures to the Vet hospital and a different doctor made me bring Graysan in immediately.   She also said it did not look like ringworm but cultured it to be safe.  Three weeks later it tested positive for ringworm.  I wish Graysan had been diagnosed earlier because he has been all over the house and on every surface.  We could have treated him when he first came in and never exposed him to the entire household until he was clear.   So now he is being treated along with Yong Gi but ringworm is something that can be passed to humans and other pets as well.

It is not something life threatening but it is a nuisance to deal with.  The earlier you start treatment and cleaning the better.  I may be dealing with this now for 2 months or more until it is eradicated because of the long wait.   I would be safe and get her tested.
