So yesterday we had our almost 6 month old kitten neutered. Normally, he is extremely lively and playful. After the surgery he hissed at the vet when he saw her, then when we got him home, he was walking around for a long time wobbling, even bled on our bed a bit. He settled after a couple of hours and started napping. I gave him only a little food which he ate somehow since he hadn't eaten for 12+ hours. I'm very worried because I don't know if our vet is very good. Once, she googled a medicine for him. And now, she didn't give him a collar and when I asked her she said it's fine for him to lick his wound. It's Day 2, he won't eat, is super depressed and is even scratching things he doesn't normally! (He has 2 scratching posts, one big one tiny) So my question is, is it normal for them to be like this a day after the operation or is it abnormal? I want my kitten to be happy, I'm seriously heartbroken seeing him like this.. I might be paranoid, but I want to rest assured that nothing is wrong.

The wobbling is normal because his anesthesia was still wearing off, and he just had surgery so he's not going to bounce back right away. It sounds to me like he's just recovering a bit slower than the average kitten. That said, not eating and drinking enough can become dangerous for a cat very quickly, so if you can't get him to eat anything you should take him to the vet. (Preferably a different one though, you're right, he really shouldn't be allowed to lick his surgery site, although an e-collar isn't always necessary for a neutering if you can just generally keep an eye on it.)

Try to tempt him with his favorite foods. I use human baby food (chicken or turkey, gerber or beechnut brand in jars are perfect) because it smells really enticing, it's easy to lap up, and it's very mild-just meat, water, and some cornstarch. If he gets some good calories and liquids in him and lots of rest, that might be all he needs to perk back up again.

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll go buy him some baby foods before the stores close! I have never heard of this, but it sounds like a really great idea! Hope he will eat it.

When my Noah got neutered , they did not put a cone on him and I was told that to let him be, I'm guessing that if he licked himself that would be me letting him be. After surgery he was a bit slow and had a hole under his bottom that looked like an open bloody wound. I was really worried that it would become infected but it never did and he healed fine. I always stopped him whenever I saw him licking though.

Trying getting him to drink flavorless pedialyte that should become hydrated while hes not eating. Once another day or so passes I would give him a couple drops of maple syrup make sure its xylitol free because xylitol can kill him. Maple syrup should perk him up. I've been told by several vets that maple syrup usually gets a cat perked up again but we don't want him too hyper as he can hurt himself.
