What would you save in a fire?

I'm pulling this question out of the "Getting to know you" game since it was popular.

If your place was on fire and all animals and humans were out safe, what would you go back in to save?

I'm a total packrat as far as mementos go, but I think I would be very practical in this case and go for my purse so I would have car keys, cell phone, driver's license, credit cards, health cards, etc.

There's a large drawer in the desk back in the hallway that's chock-full of pictures going all the way to when we were first married. Albums, piles of pictures, bags of pictures. The enter drawer is nothing but pictures. The few pictures left of our wedding, the few pictures left of our baby son. Pictures of our Rug-Kittens before they became cats. I would kill myself to save those pictures.

Why pictures? We were in the flood when Hurricane Agnes ripped through the area in 1972. We lost pretty much everything at that point. What really tore me up was losing most of the baby pictures of our son. We have some of them, but not many. And since we also lost the negatives, we were done at that point. I miss those pictures. As a mom, losing them ripped my heart out. There's a picture of our son, right before the hurricane hit. He was in his stroller in a spring-type outfit with a little red cap on his head. And he had the absolute sweetest smile when that was taken. It's gone. I remember it, but it's gone.

I can replace my drivers license, credit cards, insurance cards, etc. Yeah, it would take a while, but they can be replaced. Unless the pictures were on the Cloud or something, how do you replace them? I want the pictures.

Gosh, I don't think I'd run back for anything.  As long as we and the kitties are ok, I'm ok.  But if push came to shove I'd grab my purse also since it's the key to my identify.

My Bible (it's a family heirloom over 50 years old), my photo album, and my yellow down racing jacket (given to me by a friend who passed away 9 years ago). Would try to also get my Smartphone. Anything else is incidental.

A fire would be a disaster for me. There's no way I could get it all out. Of first importance is important papers and my photographs. There's too many of those for one trip. Then I've got boxes and boxes of family heirlooms in the basement - photographs going back 150 years, family Bibles, and so on. There is no way I could get it all out. Some days I shiver thinking about losing it all.

...with the cats...
the three boxes with (snick's, mickey's, and baby's) cremains in them, the cash i keep on hand (can be quite a large amount, at times), and the imac (computer) -- in that order.

now that i think about it, i have excellent homeowners insurance so everything replaceable would be replaced. so i'd go back for the cremains, and if i had time i'd grab the cash on hand.

Jasper's ashes, my printed photos, and my phone (it has almost all of my pictures of Jasper in it).
Everything else can be replaced, but I'm not going anywhere without my baby.

My computer, my phone, my purse, my birth certificate and SS card, a few special photo albums, a Korean porcelain pot handed down by my mother and the Bible my grandfather gave me.  And if I keep going back in for more, I'm not going to get out, so I'd better stop here!

If I could get to it, the files that have all my current year papers for income tax, several note books with genealogy history, some jewelry. Who knows, really, I would be blessed it I could just save myself and my husband.

If I had the time, Tiger's urn with his toy and collars. My tablet and cameras, too. But the computer would have to stay...unfortunately it would probably already be a goner!

I think that I would take our black box with marriage license, birth certificates, etc. plus my Bible and my iPhone.

My kitties, including the cremains of Garfy, Sammy, and Gracie, and as many of my mom's clothes as I could carry to remember her by, which I haven't been able to get rid of even yet.  The rest can just burn.

WOW, I have thought about this before. If Angel were out safe, I'd grab my purse, throw my phone in it, grab my laptop, & some disc. On one I finally typed up & put all of my poetry I wrote,

since I was 12 or 13,   (175 total!)  & other ones w/ family pictures on them, as well as photo albums, if I had time.

I do have renters insurance, but I pray that never ever happens!

-  Collection of old family photos, dates ranging from mid-1800's to 1940's. Grandparents, great grand parents, great great grandparents, Great+ aunts and uncles, cousins, etc. Oohhh man I'd be devastated otherwise! And they all range from formal pics, goofy happy stuff, pets and war/military pictures.

-  Significant documents, like birth certificate, cards, Social Security card, passport, medical stuff etc

- Family Antiques/Heirlooms. Pots, Family Bible, a handwoven rug, my maternal great grandmothers and paternal grandmothers paintings, and so forth.

- My Ballet gear (Leo',s tights, pointe shoes, slippers, tutus), and all the other historical costumes I've also made.

I'm sure there is more but those are the first that came to mind. Goodness, I think I need to install some more arms to my body! It's a lot of stuff.

Better hope it's a slow-moving fire!

I was not in a major fire but I did not know how it would go. I had a cage with birds, a dog, 2 cats + myself in a trailer in the

country without a car available. Without thought all animals went out first. Then after thought I put fire out using baking soda I had plenty of because I cleaned with it to keep smells down. I had bread in a toaster. The toast got stuck and caught a fire. The cabinets  above started burning before I knew what happened.

For Hurricane Katrina I am sad to say I HAD to leave my feral cat behind. I could not catch her and the storm was already coming in. Then the lady who helped me get out said she hated cats. When I returned I no longer could live where I was living. I looked and looked. SADLY the cat must have got washed away. As for papers and pictures well I lost about 80% of my stuff. The ONLY thing truly I missed was Stowaway. I called her that because she stayed hidden in a roll-away cabinet in the work carport. I catified it for her to stay warm.
