My cat badly broke his leg a couple of weeks ago. He had surgery (pin and wires to hold it together) just over a week ago now. He seems to be doing ok but I'm so worried about it falling apart. The surgeon told us that they could move and there is a possibility of it happening. We have him confined in a cage, but when I needed to clean his litter box (and he often makes a big mess) he ran out and jumped on a box I had nearby. It happened a couple of times and I feel so guilty and sick to my stomach. I won't let it happen anymore but how will I know if something has gone wrong?? Please help, I am so stressed!

Poor little guy! It's just so hard to keep animals still after surgery, I understand your frustration. Did the vet tell you how long it should take to heal? Do you have good photos of his leg? If you took some pictures you could refer to them if you think his leg is getting out of shape.
Is he on painkillers?

I'm guessing if they move that might cause a good deal of pain, so you might notice him limping or acting strange.  I think you should probably pose your question to your Vet.  Seems odd they didn't do more to try to hold it on place (cast, splints?  But, honestly, how can screws and wires NOT keep it in place?

Try not to stress out too badly.  It's difficult to keep cats contained under the best of circumstances, and, obviously, these are NOT the best.  He's probably got a lot of pent of energy he needs to get rid of
.  I'm guessing he's still got several more weeks of "jail time", huh?  You can only do the best you can do

Thanks ladies. He just finished his painkillers and antibiotics. I guess if anything did move it would cause him a lot of pain. I'm pretty sure he still has about another 9-10 weeks of jail time left since the break was very bad. We got an extra large dog crate. About half is blocked off with boxes so we can give him more room down the track. Hopefully he won't go too crazy in there!

We have another issue :(  Over the last couple of days I've noticed a lump (seroma?) that is a bit red and possibly getting bigger.  I've read that they can occur if the cat is more active than it should be after surgery.  He doesn't seem to be in any obvious pain and is eating normally but he is just less active now. The lump is near where the top of the pin in his leg is.  Does anyone have any experience with something like this?  He is due to have his stitches removed in a few days and I didn't want to rush back to the vet before then unless it's necessary.  Of course if it's an emergency, I'll go back immediately.  I'm going to give them a call tomorrow morning and speak to them about it but just want to get some opinions.

I'm not familiar with anything like what you've mentioned here, but then again, I've never experienced this type of injury in a pet.  All I know is that in a HUMAN, if a lump and redness were to occur, it might mean a sign of infection.  Does it bother him if you touch it or near it?  That could be a sign of infection...if it seemed to be tender.  I definitely think calling the Vet is a good idea.

BTW, I've just read up on Seroma's, and it seems like it's possible that's what it is, although they are most common at spay sites, it seems.(from what I can find googling

It doesn't seem painful for him when I touch it so I'm not sure. I will get him to the vet asap.
