OK so my 6.5 year old male kitty who by the way is approximately 20 lbs...has had a pretty serious uti...we thought we got it he kept getting worse. By Sunday night/Monday morning he was blocked...took him to the vet first thing Monday morning. We've been back and forth to vet a lot in the last few weeks. They discovered he was blocked unblocked him immediately Monday morning...he spent the night I picked him up late last night. He is still having trouble with wanting to eat. He will drink water willingly but eats so little I know it's really doing him no good. I have been force feeding him royal canin recovery. (I am not happy about that one different topic different day) I've been feeling him with a syringe andmostly to get something in him and also to make sure he can take his pain meds.

So after that long intro my question is should I continue up to force him or could he develop an aversion to food simply because he's being forced? He has a follow up appointment tomorow afternoon and thought of asking for medication to increase his appetite. I am not super happy about more medication and they keep talking to me like he will need a weekly injection and a daily pill for his bladder simply because he had a massive uti and developed crystals...now I know it's possible it could recur but am I being fear mongered? Sorry I need some advise that isn't coming frI'm someone I'm paying for advise.

Since he is drinking, could you try adding a lot of water to his food and mashing it together so he can lap it up? I'm assuming it's a pate consistency. When my cats are sick and not eating enough, I offer them some chicken baby food (the kind in a little jar) and they seem to like it, so maybe you could mix some of that in as well. I don't think he'll get an aversion to all food, but he might to that specific food. If he's still not eating anything on his own, I think you should keep with the syringe feeding, and the appetite stimulating medicine is a good thing to ask about.

I'm don't have any firsthand UTI experience, but if his is that bad it doesn't sound unreasonable to me that he will need all of that medication. At least in people, the more UTI's you've had the more likely you are to have even more, so preventing another one would be worth the shots and medicine. I know he hates it and you hate doing it to him, but it might be necessary. Hopefully someone with more experience can give you more direction, though.

If he wasn't on an all-canned diet before, I do think he should be from now on. Keeping him hydrated is the best prevention that I know of, and he'll be more likely to lose weight (I'm assuming his ideal weight is less than 20 lbs) with just wet food as well.

I think the thing to keep in mind here is that you're paying your vet for professional medical advice.  Most folks in the medical professional are ethical and are going to give you the best advice based on your cat's specific medical circumstances.

The baby food is definitely an idea...thankyou! I am not saying they aren't professionals giving me advise I pay for. I am saying being back and forth to the vet so many times andid it seems they keep saying oh this will help he has this and when it doesn't somehow it becomes I must not be doing something right so let's do this. I'm wholly frustrated. I'm pretty much maxed out on my credit line for the vet and I want what's best for my cat but of all the times we've been back and forth why didn't they find the blockage the first time and continue to pump more mess in him that obviously didn't work...no they want him on some special diet that BTW has grains in it and frankly quite a bit of by products of foods not really that good for cats. Pork...salt...gelatin etc...grains which are no nos for cats with blockage problems as it actual encourages growth of crystals. I don't dislike my vet I was just simply looking for another person who has perhaps been down this road...
