Each day I feel I get a little better at administering meds to my cat Reiki, but some days are more difficult than others. Reiki has 5 medications: three liquid, and two pills each day. Because Reiki does better with liquid than with pills, I crush the pills and add them to two of the liquids that are more like supplements, and I administer the regular liquid medication on it's own since I don't feel comfortable mixing that with the others. I've noticed that we can get whichever syringse I start with down, but by the second syringe, Reiki is more prepared to spit out the medication. I've looked into getting a different shaped syringe such as this one:

And I'm hoping this will help. So far, I hold her by her scruff, try to squirt between the back teeth, and rub her throat afterwards to make sure she swallows. Any thoughts?

for giggles take a tiny taste of the liquefied pills to see if they are in fact yucky tasting-pred and Pepcid can be very bitter tasting=I have a stubborn non pillable cat. I take those pills and break into chunks and roll in butter then let her lick it up like butter balls or you can roll in cheese and see if she will eat them like this. otherwise scruff and pull your hand back to make the head go back-the lower jaw should open enough to get your other hands pinky to gently open and drop in butter covered pill and blow on nose. follow with a syringe of water etc to make sure it goes down.

their esophagus is longer than ours=takes more time to reach that tummy.

Foxxycat,

Thank you so much! Your post spurred the thought that maybe I should make or buy some strong flavored gravy that Reiki will enjoy to mix in with the meds instead of water! The ones I must mix are, prednisolone, doxycycline (both of those are pills), Life Gold liquid, and Milk Thistle liquid. I crush the medications and mix with a little water to get them into the syringe. The problem I face is that the medicine that Reiki spits out the most is called Clavamox, a white think and milky textured medicine that is highly important as it is one of her antibiotics. Clavamox was pre-packaged by the pharmacy ( I had to add water and shake to activate), and comes with it's own syringe with the specified .7 mL dose. Not sure what I can do to make this one taste better? Again, thanks so much.

the pred would be best NOT crushed-these are VERY VERY ICKY tasting! what dose? My cat was on 2.5mg every other day. I roll it in butter and pill her-because its butter-I let her lick the butter first then scruff and pop in. THEN very important-have a chaser of baby food or other gravy style food-then she thinks you are giving treats.

the other option is getting empty gelcaps at a health food store-pop those pills inside-roll in butter and pill her-that way she don't taste the pred/doxy-both are HORRIBLE tasting!

The THIRD option=take a syringe-put pills inside-add 1cc of water-let dissolve=once dissolve-have another syringe of babyfood/water mixture-then try to give it this way with a chaser of babyfood/gravy.

oh the last option=for the pred=I had another way to get it in her=babyfood,. I put babyfood chunks of meat on my finger=she eats it. then halfway sneak in half of the pred-2.5mg chunk=roll it in babyfood and have her lick it off=that was the only way I could get it in her-otherwise it was a fight.

I have to give my guy a few medications daily; some are twice a day.

I have had the steroid, compounded into a Tuna flavor. He does not mind that. Artie takes it really good.

The Pepcid, horrible tasting, is put into an empty gel cap. I use a pill gun to get him to take it. I also give him some water (baby medicine syringe) as a chaser, after each pill.

The best way I can give it to Artie is by putting him in the corner of an armchair. I have him trapped on one side by the arm of the chair, the back is holding him from moving away, and my body is stopping the forward movement.

I just open his mouth, and that is that. I also keep his mouth closed with my hand, for a little bit, to make sure he does not spit it out~~~ he has a habit of doing so....

Artie now knows, is trained, that when I say "open" and touch the pill gun to the front of his mouth, he automatically opens his mouth..

Good Luck!!

Doxycycline is available as a liquid and you can have it flavored. I had to give chicken flavored liquid doxycyclin to a previous cat before and it was really yummy. He had no problem licking it up mixed with a little canned food. Ask your vet about the liquid version of doxycycline.

Try Pill Pockets to hide the pills in.

I just finished giving my Aby a 7 day course of  Flagyl, 0.65 ml / dose. I just used the vet supplied syringe, which is this one on Amazon. I just sit him on the bathroom counter facing away from me and then I hold him against my body with my left arm and slowly squirt small amounts of the medicine into the sideof his mouth aiming towards the throat. Flagyl is a bitter tasting medicine even with a chicken flavoring. My cat drooled and foamed after each squirt. I just wiped his mouth clean and give him a break before the next quirt of medicine. It typically took 3 or 4 squirts to get all the medicine in. Afterwards he got fed to help get rid of the nasty taste in his mouth.

Before my kitten teach me that how she want her medicines, I grab her between my thighs and grab her head in my hands while opening her mouth with my fingers, I gave her medicine with tea spoon, and only release her head after she drink it. What a bad way, is not it

Now from few days, I'm giving her minimal and as necessary medicine during play, when we are fighting after meals, I lay down her and pinch her belly, so she grab my hand with her paws and open her mouth, I put dry medicine in powder shape, in her mouth, with paper made dispenser, then again after playing few moments I put syringe filled with syrup or water (5ml), and release all in her mouth....very easy

The first dose of Atopica for our Mikki was with a syringe in the mouth at the vet's office. She reacted horribly to the bitter taste. If I had to do that to her every day...in our case, her ailment wasn't worth the daily trauma of the syringe! Lo and behold we shot the syringe into her can food meal (not stirring it in) and just piled a small clump of food on top and gave her half dose and she gobbled it. Each day we increased the dose with no problems. Maybe that could work with one of your meds?
