Hi, everyone. I'm new to having a cat as I rescued one on Jan 10th of this year. I noticed him at my job back in November, and never owning a cat or knowing anything about them, I'd feed him 3 time a day. I work 7am to 3pm so I'd feed him at 7/11 and before I left at 3pm. I was only trying to make sure he was not hungry. And his little belly got so fat in 2 months. As I gained his trust I was able to take him to the vet get his shots, neutered and Dewormed. He said he was too fat. Any suggestions on what I should feed him and what times would you feed him? I now get him wet friskies in the can. And I put out a can at 6:30 am before I leave. I come in at 3:30 pm and I give him a half can and I'll feed him the other have at 8pm. They are the round 5.5oz cans the size of tuna cans. Any help will be greatly appreciated, as like I said I know nothing about cats and I'm learning on the fly. I just knew God said save this little fella do I did. Now I don't want to kill him from him being so fat. Thanks guys!

How old is cat, if under 1 year 1/2 can 3 times day is ok. This is presuming your are not free-feeding dry also, or someone else is not feeding him, if he goes out! I feed an outside feral who eats more than my indoor cats, she is young small and spayed. She eats 1.5 to 2 cans Friskies, but she is out in freezing temps and travels around for exercise.

He's 5 months, he doesn't go out as the vet said since he was ferral never let him out. I'm not free feeding nor giving him dry, as the vet said dry can kill cats in the long run.

Do you have a picture of him? How much does he weigh? If he's REALLY fat then yah, you might need to ration out food, the picture in your avatar doesn't look like a cat that needs a food intervention :)  Certainly ferals that become indoor cats can have problems regulating food intake.

I'm of the opinion that kittens under 8 months should eat as much as they want, though.

This is a pic of him on Jan 10th so he's about the same size as this still

Unfortunately, It's hard to tell from the pic. When your vet told you he was too fat, did he/she give you any recommendations?

Do you have a scale at home? We periodically weigh our kittens by measuring me+cat, me w/out cat, and calculating the difference.

Just told me I need to feed him less. And yes I'll try the scale tonight. Thanks

2 full cans of Friskies is a bit much, if it's the pate kind. The shreds/chunks/etc. are lower in calories but higher in carbs, so the pate kind is better for daily feeding. At his age, 1 1/2 cans should be fine, and he shouldn't be too upset because he'll still be getting fed 3 times a day, just half a can in the morning instead of a full can :D. As he gets older, you may have to cut him back to 1 can a day.

He looks round in the belly in the picture, but not fat all over. Ask the vet if he needs another dose of de-wormer.
