Hi all, this is a fairly new problem with one of our 5 month old kittens. In the last few weeks he's decided he doesn't want to poo in any of the litter trays. We've put a litter mat under his fav tray but he goes on the rug next to it. He'll pee in any of them, we hadn't moved any of them, we have a big tray a little tray and a covered tray and he's used all of them but does seem to prefer one.

We scoop in the morning, lunch time and as we see anything in the evening.

Sometimes of we see him squat we can put him in a tray and he goes, sometimes he runs off and goes later.

We've tried changing the litter to a sandy one, putting a bigger tray next to his fav little one at the time of day he goes in case he wants some choice and changing the litter more often (we tend to do them twice a week anyway).

We've just emptied and cleaned his tray and put a puppy pad in it instead to see if that works. There's nothing odd about his poos either - they are just like his sister's.

He's really healthy otherwise so not sure at what point we need to take him to the Vets. We're trying to remember if this corresponds with him being neutered at the beginning of Jan....

You can try adding even more litter boxes that look different from what he has now in different places. It's possible was spooked by something while he was pooping once in the tray and now he doesn't want to risk that again.

If that doesn't work, a vet check-up would be a good idea because this could be a sign of discomfort. Even though he seems healthy otherwise, cats are good at hiding problems and at the very least a vet could rule out anything medical being the problem.
