I am asking for your opinions or experience for my mother who is 87 and adopted 2 rescue cats 4 years ago..

Dani has a sunroom the cats love with windows, their litter box is in the laundry room , door open 24 hours a day..

The older cat Dani a female spayed and is treated well, no excessive noise in the house, cared for well loved and a beautiful home in the city...lives inside with her adopted brother Leo.

Dani urinates on a sock or shoe or rug or anything that is on the floor.

She has been doing this for years..She has been to the vet

and  nothing was found like a UTI ..I asked if their litter box was large enough and cleaned out often and I was told yes.....

Do you have any thoughts on what causes a cat to do this?

Sheri for Dani..

It's possible Dani does not like sharing the litter box.  The general rule of thumb is one box per cat, plus one extra.  Do you know if she urinates in the box at all?  Some cats actually prefer a separate box for each function.   Here is an article that addresses a lot of litter box issues.
[article="32366"]How To Solve Litterbox Problems In Cats The Ultimate Guide  [/article]
The fact that she has been doing this for years may make it very difficult to change her behavior.  Make sure every thing she's soiled is well cleaned with an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle as otherwise she may be drawn back to repeat the performance.  The enzymes break down the urine molecules so no odor remains to a sensitive cat nose - any odor might draw Dani back with the belief that this is an appropriate place to pee.

Thank you for replying about Dani ,mothers cat

I had thought of this and mentioned it to my mother but she would not provide 2 litter boxes

so I am relaying your thoughts to her and she might listen to someone other than

her daughter.

I wrote her and told her what litter to buy , unscented

and to go to walmart and get two long and wide storage containers

low to the ground..is what we use..too

and put 4 inches of new litter in each box in different rooms..

I hope she listens as she refuses to take advice from anyone..

I also got  small bucket and scoop and plastic bags that  I keep

by each litter box we have for our 2 cats...

By the way Bro is doing better at night...less yelling and  anxiety...

with his own litter box and in a small

room utility room at night with a night light on and also now giving him

at bedtime Black wing Drama Trauma on treats to calm him..

The smaller room and his own litter box and black wing drama trauma

and prayers ..are helping him to get over losing his brother to the mauling

by dogs 3 months ago...

He has accepted his new sister...Lily who is 8 months old we adopted

2 and half months ago ..and he is like the grandfather to her LOL

Any thoughts on calming down Lily who is tearing up  my furniture all day long

I have played with her for hours and she is not letting up since I got her...

I can not spray anything that has an odor to it due to my allergies...

on the couch or chairs or curtains?

Good news about Bro.  I remember reading about his brother - what a horrible thing.  I'm really glad he's starting to recover, poor baby.

Re:  Lily, I unfortunately do not have much experience with kittens but it's my understanding they do eventually calm down.  In the meantime - there are furniture protectors you can get that are basically the same thing as double sided sticky tape.  Getting that wrapped around her claws a few times might make the furniture less appealing and send her to her scratching post instead.  What kind of post does she have, btw?  Different cats like different materials (cardboard, sisal, carpet) and some like horizontal versus vertical so you might make some progress by experimenting there.

Lily is also old enough that she could be fitted with Soft Claws.  Here's a search link on Amazon - there are lots of different possibilities out there.  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...field-keywords=Soft+claws&tag=&tag=thecatsite

If Lily is really on the wild side, she might respond to a calming product, such as Feliway diffuser or spray, or Composure treats or liquid.  I've never tried these but lots of our members have had great success with them.

Good luck with your Mom.  I hope she does listen.  It will have to be easier than cleaning up all the time!

She may have medical problems that may limit her getting in a litter box comfortable. Try a second litter box that is lower on one side than what you have. Also watch and see if stray cats come around at night spraying outside. This can stress out cats sometimes and they will wet in weird places.

Lily has the scratcher of cardboard and she uses it on the floor and she has the tall semi upright one of sisal and carpet at the bottom..

I even spray cat nip on things for her and use the relaxing blackwing drama trauma at night on treats..I tried that on her in the daytime

and she never slowed down! She was still wild...tearing across the room

as she is now!

I put her in her huge dog cage to watch tv on low with me at times to

restrain her..and she will calm down..I do not yell at her when I put her in the 42 inch wide dog open bar crate...I want to yell out of frustration but I do not..

Will check on the link you sent me..and thank you for Lily , Bro and mothers cat Dani.

I sent her the info..by email...on getting two litter boxes and using the low storage containers and no top on them...

getting them at least 36 inches long...for one cat...

that is Bro in the picture with Lily...

Thank you again

Aw, Lily and Bro look very sweet together.  Do they actually go into the cave at the bottom?  Mine avoid theirs like it's haunted or something!

Just some more ideas about calming Lily down a bit....

Chamomile and/or hops may be helpful.   They're typically brewed into a tea and small amounts ingested.  I don't have a recipe - only a warning to use small amounts and not to let cats chew on flowers or leaves.

Nature's Miracle has a calming spray available but I've not read how effective it is.  Still it might be worth checking out.

There are also products like Bach's Rescue Remedy and Spirit Essences.  A lot of people swear by these products but they are homeopathic and the theories behind their efficacy are controversial.  Here are websites for both, if you are interested.

http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pets-bach-flower/

http://www.spiritessences.com/category-s/1898.htm

And finally, don't overlook Feliway.    It actually emits a calming pheromone in the air.  There is no odor and people with allergies are typically not affected (from what I've read).  It's expensive unfortunately but several of our members have indicated amazon has the best prices.

thank you

the bach formula did not work for Bro...

used 2 bottles of it...in 2 months,,

We just started the blackwing formula

a lady out of california owns the company and she said

she uses twice the amount of two ingredients than the man

who made the Bach rescue remedy did or does..

We will see...

it did not calm lily down any during the daytime but we are using it on Bro at night...

I will check o n the Feliway I saw it at Pet smart ..but due to the cost

and not knowing if it affects the allergies of humans or if it has an odor

I did not buy it...thanks for what you  know on those issues ...

as I can detect any smell in the house or on other people having myself

chemical sensitivity illness..MCS illness, husband has it too..for 30 years..

I do order through amazon and really like their customer service a lot..

Always want to learn.and thanks for sharing with me

Hi Sheri, I'm just now reading this thread. I also recommend the Feliway plug in, or comfort zone. (same thing, just diff. name).  I have used it for Angel for at least 4 years now, after the 1st time he had cystitis.

(& just in case he sees a stray in the yard, & gets stressed out).  Just to keep his stress down over all.  I know how sensitive you are. I am pretty sensitive too, especially to smells. You do not smell the plug in at all.

It just mimicks the "good pharamones" that they have, to help them be calm.   I would not recommend buying it from the store at all. It is really expensive that way. Amazon is cheaper, even w/ shipping!

In fact, I just ordered a 2 pk. of refills from amazon today. I always look for the best price on there too.      I just keep it plugged in the living room, since that's mostly where we are, & he seems to be staying in lately, even to sleep at night.  I think I have read that one covers around 500 sq. ft.

This is what I found for you.

This one is a little more expensive to start, but you are getting the plug in w/ one refill in a pk. as well as a 2 refill pk. so pretty good deal for the plug in & 3 bottles.

This is the 2 pk. refill I usually get. It's the best priced one I have found, so I keep it on my wish list, to "bookmark" it, so it's easy to find when I need to reorder.

I hope this helped! ( Hopefully, this will chill her out a little. )

she is a control freak..my 87 year old  mother and always will be...

I talked to my  mother on the phone and she is not listening to me...

thank you for replying...appreciate it..  I know the cats need 2 litter boxes and she can afford it...I told her she is lazy..as she makes her 92 year old husband clean out the litter box and buy the litter himself...she has always been for self..and says she loves the cats..well she does and they have everything.lovely place to live..and food and vet checks once a year..or if sick..but the litter boxes would be the first thing I would do and clean them no matter how I felt..daily..I do it and I do not feel well myself...my husband does it also.. I just get frustrated when you do research and someone will not listen to you when you say it kindly ...well a controller will not listen we all know that...controlling people...pardon me if I upset anyone but I imagine we all know one of those..My  mother drives all over the huge city she lives in with her husband and gets around like a 40 year old..they go out everyday to lunch...and places..just so you understand that I am not impatient and not compassionate for older people..I am....I wish she had not mentioned Dani peeing all over their new beautiful home, I was trying to solve the problem...to help them...

You're welcome. I think it will be a very good thing for both of them. I think it will really help Bro too!   Maybe purchasing a spray as well to spritz in the room he is in at night.  I know they say for carriers to spray about 30 minutes before putting them in, so maybe the same for before he goes in there for the night. You could lightly spay his bed. The spray is about 17.00.  (since the plug in will probably be in a larger general area, like your living room.
