My cat was prescribed Mirtazapine for an appetite stimulant.  (He fell down the stairwell a few weeks ago and now I have had him confined for awhile in a spare bedroom during the day and in a playpen at night.)

The problem is he's been eating less and less since the fall and I've tried every trick I can think of to get him to eat.  He is having surgery to repair his knee in a few weeks.

I've always joked that he has mental health issues, but about an hour after I gave him the itty bitty piece of the tablet he started acting wierd.  He did eat some!  but then he started yelling when I left the room and then when I was sitting near him grabbed for me and tried to bite me purring all the while.

Now one reason I say he's crazy is he often has petting aggression.  If he's sitting on a blanket or a sheet and you try to move it he yells at you and then proceeds to attack your arm/hand.

Usually I'm not afraid of him, he always seems to have control of himself.

He vocalizes occasionally, but he was yowling for me to come back in the room.  Now he's lying on the bed, but his eyes are wide open.

I don't have any kitty experience with Remeron but I recall my mom took it once to stimulate her appetite.  Only once.  She acted weird too, drunk and sleepy.  It was like she was given a truth serum, lol.

Why is the kitty not eating?

I hate mirtazapine! It is know as yeowlzipine!!

It causes restlessness, excessive vocalization, an onward.

It does help with an increased appetite, but I, personally cannot stand to have my guy on it. It is a no for me...

I do not think anything additionally is wrong with your cat. I criticize the side effects to that of the drug..

I am on record as to not prescribing Mirtazapine for my guy.. I do have some in the house, but I refuse to administer them...

What dose were you given? My kitten Buster did okay on Mirtz awhile back, but he was given only a tiny crumb (1/8th of 15mg tablet, every 3 days) when he was hospitalized.

I know of plenty of other kitties who get crazy reactions though- it is commonly called, "MeoWZapine"   My Tiger did well with Cyprohepatadine, it is much gentler and you only need a tiny tiny bit.

Oh that's funny - yeowlzipine/meowzapine - why didn't the vet warn me!?!?!

they broke the 15 mg pill up into 4 pieces.  he's about 14lbs

he seems to have calmed down quite a bit, I got his favorite toy and we played for awhile.

at least he ate something and i won't have to syringe feed him tonight :)D

Thanks!

Yeah, mirt had some interesting effects with Lucky. It worked great with Sara when she needed it about a year ago. And it worked great for the first time with Lucky, but after that all it did was make him agitated, and not eat more.

At least he's eating though! I can survive with the meowing if they are eating. Sara got the crazy meowing but I didn't care because she was finally eating.
