Hello everyone, my names Tasha. I really need someone's help!! My baby Gala is about 4-5 months old, we got her 2 months ago, almost 3 from a shelter in our state. She has had diarrhea since we've had her and we went to the vet and they said it was the most Coccidia they've ever seen in a kitten. So we had this oral medicine (I can't remember what it's called) and a month went by and they wanted to check her stool again to make sure it cleared up. Well the Coccidia did, but then they found round worms. So she had a topical on the back of her neck but the diarrhea is still there, it was only fully solid once or twice. So we sent in another fecal test a few weeks ago and they sent it out to be fully diagnosed and nothing. But the diarrhea is still there? But it was very watery this time so I went to the vet and they gave me Proviable-DC and sent to give it a few days and to let them know. Well she was supposed to get fixed tomorrow but I called to make sure the diarrhea would be fine and they ended up post poning it to next week and gonna give her that oral medication again along with continuing the Proviable-DC. Is there anything else that could have caused this??? She doesn't eat foreign objects, and her current food is Taste of the Wild. After this medicine is done were gonna try a bland diet and if that doesn't work I don't know what else to do!

Has she been tested using the PCR Diarrhea panel?  Has she been tested for Tritrichomonas foetus?  That's where I would start.  Did she have diarrhea at the shelter?  It could be that the food you're feeding her is too rich for her body.  I feed Taste of the Wild dry to my kitties, even when they were kittens, but I always mixed it with some kitten food.  My favorite kitten food to feed is Royal Canin wet and dry.  I didn't make the grain-free switch on my kittens until they were almost a year old.  I even have one kitty who cannot tolerate a grain-free diet and gets a prescription sensitive tummy food in addition to the grain-free wet and dry we feed.

I'm not sure what kind of tests they did in her fecal sample, I'll have to ask if this doesn't clear up. We went today and as I stated she is starting her oral medicine again as well as the Proviable-DC. They also are having her on a bland diet so we are feeding her something called ID prescription food. They want her poo to be solid for at last three weeks before we slowly transition back to Taste of the Wild. I was thinking maybe it's because its too rich as well. Is there any other grain free diets that are just as good?

I'm in the process of finding one for my gang as the food we were feeding has been discontinued. :(  We're feeding Canidae right now with some of the old food.  My one kitty who has to have some form of grain to keep his poops firm is on a little bit of Royal Canin Gastroinestinal HE.

I repeat this in every diarrhea thread. If no medical things are causing the diarrhea a raw diet will probably cure your pet's diarrhea!! I use primal raw frozen nuggets and its the only food that hasnt given him diarrhea. Some cats cannot digest processed pet food!

I was looking at the raw diets but I just can't afford some of the prices they have for them. I don't even know where to start, lol. I wouldn't say I'm a new cat owner because I have three cats, and Gala is a cat me and my fiance got from a shelter, but my family always buys the crappiest foods because they're cheap. So I'm new with the whole high quality foods. Like I said I'm on Taste of the Wild right now, and I was reading about Blue Buffalo which had just about no negative reviews. How do raw nuggets work? I saw online the Primal Raw Frozen Nuggets are 12.99 for a 5.5 oz bag but how long does that last for one kitty? RIght now we go through one 5lb bag of taste of the wild in a month.

My other cats eat Meow Mix which I know is a terrible cat food, but like I said I just got this cat of my own and I didn't want her on a cheap diet but I also have no idea what I'm looking for to ensure the food is high-quality. My vet gave me a list of "best" and "good" foods, and high-lighted the grain-free one's, but some of those cat foods on there were unbelievably expensive. FROMM is on top of the list with 2-lb bags being at $17! and the 15-lb bags at $49.73! I don't have that type of money, so if anyone knows of some high-quality foods at at-least half the price, please let me know because I'm only paying $10.99 for a 5-lb bag of TOTW. I know foods should be approved by the AAFCO, and I know they should make up at least 30% of crude protein. So if someone could enlighten me on good tips, quality brand, etc., I'm all ears because I enjoy learning new things to ensure my cats at it's healthiest and has a good coat, etc. I just want my poor baby to stop being sick as well! Thank you guys!!

It's also possible that she's allergic to a certain protein.  Chicken is a common problem.

If you know of a store that carries primal products they might be able to do a special order for you. Thats what my store does. I order 3lb frozen nuggets. Its like $20 per pag for the cheaper ones like chicken, turkey and pork. It lasts a week if you do 100% raw. You dont have to do 100% raw. You can try 50/50 and see if it improves your cats condition.

Yes meow mix is so terrible. Some better dry brands:

-Wellness core kitten (purple bag)

Have you tried any wet food for your kitten?
Weruva
nutro naturals - chicken or turkey variety
fancy feast - classics
sheba

You can also try some cat probiotics.

Also an easy one is feeding a couple of teaspoons of pure canned pumpkin every day. No pie mix.

I know how frustrating it is to deal with a kitty with diarrhea issues right in the beginning. :/

When my Noah was a kitten he was severely underweight and have severe anemia when I say he had diarrhea you can't imagine how bad our situation was. Diarrhea was just oozing out of him every single second of the day. As soon as I would wipe his bottom another droplet would form followed with a train of more poop and this went on for weeks. At the time we were feeding him Royal cannin for kittens, it was gifted to us so at the time I didn't know how expensive it was. Fed up and really worried with the diarrhea I called the cat house on the kings and they told me to feed him raw meat and to sprinkle this sort of spice on his food I forget what it is it begins with an S but it's famous for ending diarrhea in cats. I never used the spice but the raw lean beef meat sure helped! After a couple days of feeding him the meat inbetween regular feedings his constant diarrhea stopped.
We also stopped feeding him wet canned food and tried feeding him only 2 a day and only very small portions. We later switched him to the hills science diet for kittens and he did great. Feeding him chicken and white rice should also help.

A couple days after rescuing Noah we took him to the vet and the vet looked him over and admitted Noah was a weak kitten but that he would bounce back as if it was magic and to feed him chicken, let him drink pedialyte and give a bit of maple syrup (xylitol free) when it seemed like he lacked energy.

The vet told me not to fret because he said cats are one of the most hardy animals in existence and just a bit of care would give Noah a new lease on life.Hope this helps!

The magic "S" spice @GabbySantana mentioned might be Saccharomyces boulardii, a type of probiotic yeast. It IS very effective for diarrhea, but it tastes horrible. My cat foams at the mouth like someone tried to poison her if I give it to her. Maybe other cats hate it less...

It's possible that having so many parasites could have left your kitten's digestive tract incredibly inflammed and reacting to everything. I knew someone that became lactose intolerant after getting a parasite (I think Giardia), but was able to drink milk again after a gut healing diet (including lots of probiotics and turmeric). Not sure how turmeric works in cats, I saw someone here way she was going to try it but never heard back if it worked or not. A lot of people have success with slippery elm bark or marshmallow root for healing their cat's digestive tract, preservative free aloe juice (from the gel inside the leaf only! the outer green part is a stomach irritant) can also help healing.

You could also try doubling the Proviable.

One thing to note: the high protein, grain free foods look way more expensive, but are actually not quite so much more expensive because they make cats get fuller faster (so they don't need to eat as much).

You don't have to start with premade raw, you can just cut off a piece of whatever you're cooking for yourself and give it to your cat. If you're only feeding it as a supplement to commercial manufactured food (so about 10% of the day's calories or less), it doesn't have to be "balanced." A lot of cats don't take to eating raw right away, anyway, so probably better to try out raw with little bites from meat you bought anyway than buy a whole bag of expensive cat food that your cat may or may not be into.

Thank you all for your replies! Currently right now she is taking Albon liquid, Proviable-DC and a wet food called i/d digestive care. We just got a bag of the dry ($21 for 4lb!!) i/d and she was nibbling at it today. It's a bland diet and it's supposed to be easier for her to digest. We're going to see after the liquid is up if she get's better. I think it's so stupid that they have her on all three of these at once because then we can't figure out exactly which one worked, so we could have just wasted a bunch of money, but regardless whichever works I am just glad she's gonna be better. Her stool does seem a little better, but she hasn't really gone potty since switching her to the bland diet. Which to me seems like a good thing because maybe her stool is hardening up. IF after her liquid is up and the diet isn't working, I will try one of the many options you guys have gave me. It's a little difficult to follow all this new information but if I have any questions thank god for this site lol. I literally just joined this like two days ago and you guys are waaay more helpful than a google search. The thing is we are moving in August so I'm not sure what store carries what, but we're going down at the end of February so I'll have to make a list of things to look for. Even though she has diarrhea, overall she seems pretty healthy. Pink gums, shiny coat, very active and loving. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. I'm hoping it was because her digestive tract was just inflammed from all the parasites and hopefully not the food, or anything more serious.

I also emailed the shelter we got her from and she also had diarrhea from round worms the two weeks she was there before we adopted her, so fingers crossed it was from the parasites and not a sensitive tummy or anything.

@kittyluv387  I looked at that link you sent me and I really loved it, thank you so much! I think we might switch to the Wellness CORE and the Merrick Before Grain Chicken (Also fits our budget better because an 11lb bag is $25 and she mixes the both and a 2lb bag of the Wellness CORE is $10) So super pumped about that because they have both brands at a Petco where we are moving and if all else fails have to order it online which is no big deal I suppose. So now all thats left is to get this diarrhea away! Will keep you guys posted.
