Hi I have a 13 yr old M cat and I recently got an 8 month old chihuahua foster pup.

Foster pup has ticks and worms. :( I have bathed him in dawn, flea & tick soap, and treated him with frontline. I also mopped and vaccuumed the crap out of my house and got some diatomaceous earth and will be laying that down and re cleaning the house. He will be getting his de worming meds tonight.

Now I want to treat my cat for ticks/fleas just to be safe. Is there a brand of flea preventative that is safe that I can buy from pets mart? Or will I need to purchase some from my vet? Frontline was used for the pup and he seems fine can I use frontline the cat version for my cat? I have heard of people using a certain brand bought from wal mart and stuff that has killed their cats so I'm wondering what the safe brand is that I can use?

Thank you

Revolution, Frontline Tritak and Frontline Plus are the only safe meds I know of that treat for both fleas AND ticks. Make sure you get the cat-specific brands of these.

The only places I purchase these meds from are the vet or 1800petmeds.com as I know for certain these are the same exact products.

The meds you want to avoid are Hartz, Seargents and Sentry.

Thank you. So 1800 pet meds is as safe as meds from the vet then?

Yes, the meds from pet meds are the same as from the vet, only a bit cheaper.  You will still need a prescription from your vet.  Pet Meds will call the vet to confirm.

I've had good luck with Revolution.  I haven't tried the others mentioned.  But definitely avoid Hartz.  A friend of mine used it on his cat and it almost killed the poor thing.  There is lots of internet chatter about reactions to Hartz.

Good luck with the fleas and ticks.  If you don't have one, a flea comb is good to have.  Besides removing fleas, combing your cat will help you gauge the level of infestation.

Revolution does work against ticks. It does not say this on the label; but, I have confirmed this with multiple vets.

Whatever you do, consult with your vet and purchase it from your vet's office.  Don't use anything over the counter.  We use Revolution with our crew because it treats for heartworms and we live deep in the heart of mosquito country.  However, I have one kitty who can't have Revolution.  We'll have to talk to the vet about what to give her.
